In my eyes, Janes Addiction/Perry Ferrell killed Metal, not Nirvana. JA opened the doors for bands to play heavy music and melodic music and art music and not conform to the "scene". Ferrell far from a great singer, but he is a zen master...a pigs in zen master I should say. The guys from Pearl Jam opened for JA in the 80's when they were green river...They say JA changed everything for them in terms of music

Brad Nowell died far too young but hard to compare the two considering the different genres, although both are great surfers.

Sublime hit it big 10 years after Janes Addiction, shoot, by 1996 Porno for Pyros was on the outs, Nowell was overdosing, and he probably had no clue he was about to sell a few million records.

JA was before my time, so that could easily be a reason why I'm so bias towards Sublime. But damn, that must have been quite a show with Pearl Jam opening up for JA.

Sometimes I wonder what the music scene would be like if Cobaine/Nowell didn't OD like they did. Would the 'grunge era' still be a live and well, or would it have slowly died off just like it did in the late 90's. Interesting to think about...

Music was exploding in the 1990's, so many different genre's. Cobain gets way too much credit, and grunge didn't die with Curt Cobain, grunge was a media driven hype machine that burned out all its own. Think of the bands that came out in the early 1990's not from Seattle....Tool, they were heavy and slow paced and melodic but they were not considered grunge, although if they were from Seattle they'd almost certainly be called grunge.

Anyway, you look at Sublime, or Rage, or Tool, or Blind Melon, or Helmet, and then add in the seattle sounds...AIC, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Mudhoney....all very different in style, all great rock bands. Yet only the seattle bands get called...grunge.

That's why I say Janes was the precurser to these groups, because they were essentially finished in 89-90. They were not MTV darlings, in fact, Perry Ferrell would put naked women in all their videos so they WOULDN'T be played on MTV. They finally caved for been caught stealin'.

And it wasn't Pearl Jam that opened for JA, it was Green River or Mother Love Bone, one of the prior bands that Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament were in before evolving to PJ

The 2003 United Center show is one hell of a set list. Wish I would have been there.

Interesting stuff on the naked women being in all of their videos, you really know your stuff WC. How many times did you see bands like Tool, Rage, JA, etc. live? Must have been sick shows, can't imagine seeing bands at that caliber in their prime like that.

Truth, not that many, I'm guessing 5-10 for Tool and PJ, Rage only a handful of times, Janes only once. I got married in 94 and my concert-going days were pretty much over, although the last concert I took my ex-wife to was Rage, probably our only good memory besides the birth of our son.

I did get to see Tool and Pearl Jam down in Tijuana (different shows)before they were big. The Pearl Jam show was at this crazy three-story joint that maybe held 200 people called Iguanas, seeing Eddie freefall was pretty mindblowing.

In 91 or 92 they had a show at the Del Mar fairgrounds...Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. RHCP was probably bigger than the other two at that time down in SD, they had a huge following down there. That's a big triple header.

BTW..I don't know shit. Tesco Vee works in the biz, he's shit more than I'll ever know

And if the Road Warrior says it, it must be true..

Perry Farrell and his wife, Etty, came into the studio and Howard remarked how young and skinny Perry looked. Perry said drugs keep him skinny, but it seemed unclear if
he was joking. Howard asked Etty if she was satisfied with Perry, and she responded, “every morning.” Etty added that they have two boys, and that Perry is a good father. Perry said
his children told their teacher that their dad is a singer and their mom takes her clothes off for a living. Perry noted that he's going to advise his kids not to “be a fool” with drugs. Howard asked Perry how he got off heroin, and Perry said “you run out” and grow up.

Howard asked Perry what he thought of Dave Navarro's appearance on “Rock Star: Supernova.”
Perry said he'd never appear on the show because it reduces music to a contest, and he'd rather expose his genitals to his wife instead. Perry's wife said they met when she was a backup dancer on one of the Jane's Addiction tours. Perry performed “Been Caught Stealing” with his new band Satellite Party.

Howard told Perry not to take it the wrong way, but he might have to bang his wife. Perry said he heard Howard had a hot girl himself, so they might have to get together
for “a dinner.” Perry then asked if he could be invited to Howard's wedding. Howard said he could come to the party afterward. Howard asked what Perry thought of satellite radio, and Perry reported he loved it and Etty added that they have Sirius.

Perry said he would never leave his wife if she was ever disfigured, because he loves amputees. Perry's wife admitted that their sex life is pretty wild. Howard
asked Perry if he had had sex with a man before, and Perry said he had and enjoyed it. Perry also said he sued to have a sex tape from being released on the Internet.
When the tape was returned to him, he took it into his backyard and burned it. Howard then thanked Perry and played Satellite Party's new single, “Wish Upon A Dog Star”.

Wish I had heard that....I've heard the song, not a big fan of it. PF has sold his soul a bit, I guess that's what happens when music becomes your means of survival...ie job. Think how many Janes Addiction songs you hear in ads and on TV now, Superhero is the intro to Entourage, Mountain Song, True Nature, Hypersonic, and others on commercials...come to think of it, Strays was a pretty damn good record.

do you not think this has to do with the unusual pairing of him and nuno?

The 90's IMO was the best decade for music. You still had some strong metal bands at their peak like Slayer and Pantera plus you had your cock rock bands like GNR and Skid Row. Rap and Hip Hop was at the top of its game. Plus we had bands like Rage, Smashing Pumpkins, STP, Beck and Radiohead blowing shit up coupled with the Grunge Rock and carryover bands like Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Suicidal Tendencies, Aerosmith etc... There were also countless one hit wonders that were fixtures of the 90's.

Best decade for music!!!!

All of this is pointless as the best band of the 90's was The Smashing Pumpkins who truly are the Led Zeppelin of that decade as their catalog is so deep, most of it was never played live. This is big considering they have played thousands of shows.

Hell, TSP is tied with being the best band ever & yes, they are tied to Led Zeppelin.
