Thursday, 3 March 2005: The Thoroughbred Racing Protective Bureau, the investigative arm of the Thoroughbred Racing Associations of North America, has signed a memorandum of understanding with UK-based betting exchange Betfair.

The agreement allows for Betfair to provide the TRPB with any information related to betting activity on North American horse where there are reasonable grounds to suspect that the integrity of racing might be compromised.

The TRPB mandate is to expose and investigate activities prejudicial to horse racing and to maintain public confidence in thoroughbred and standardbred racing.

"We are pleased that Betfair has made this new investigative resource available to us," TRPB president Paul Berube said.

"Experience has taught us that all betting activity is important no matter where and how it takes place."

Betfair says it is uniquely placed to monitor the US horse racing market.

"We’re once again delighted to be broadening the relationships we have with sports regulatory bodies all over the world," said Betfair Director of Communications Mark Davies.

"We look forward to working with TRPB as we have with their colleagues in sports regulation in countries as far apart as England and Australia."

Davis said Betfair had reaffirmed its willingness to enter into a similar agreement with the Australian Racing Board.

Betfair also has similar memorandums of understanding with other racing and sporting entities, including the Jockey Club in the UK, National Horseracing Authority of South Africa and the National Greyhound Racing Board.

The Thoroughbred Racing Associations board of directors voted unanimously in December to form an exploratory committee to examine the possibility of creating an industry-owned betting exchange to benefit racing in North America.
