OK guys. Who do you think does the best and the worst job of televising football?
My opinions:
1) The crew on ESPN Sunday night NFL does the very best job of televising football. I don't think anyone else comes close. Lots of cameras and good overall quality. Theisman and two others (can't remember their names) do an outstanding job of making every play exciting. This weekly telecast is worlds better than the next best. This telecast can make a 45-3 blowout football game interesting to watch from start to finish.
Grade: A++
2) The crew on the ESPN 6:45 (CST) Saturday Night game also does an outstanding job. This one is Mike Godfried and Ron Turner. I do think they'd be better served with a more exciting guy than Mike Godfried, though. Lots of cameras and excellent sound quality. Good job of mic'ing the bands and stadium. They have quality voices, however their excitement level is not where it should be. Overall, this is a very high quality broadcast.
Grade: A
3) Wouldn't have dreamed I'd be saying this a year ago, but CBS has shown immeasurable improvement in their ability to broadcast the CBS 2:30 (CST) SEC match up every Saturday afternoon. Last year, this was one of the worst telecasts in the business. This year, they have much higher picture quality and much better sound quality. They're doing an excellent job of capturing the stadium atmoshpere. Good job of mic'ing the bands and capturing the stadium roar. The lead announcer, Vern Lundquist, sucks...boring as fire...he needs to be let go (a long time ago), but CBS is still doing a fine job with this one as compared with last year.
Grade: B+
4) ESPN's Thursday night game is a fine quality broadcast. Mike Torrico is one of the best in the business. Lee Corso and Kirk Herbstreet always make it interesting.
Grade: B
5) ABC's Monday Night Football is a quality broadcast. Al Michaels does a nice job. Madden is too old to add any excitement. Just thank God they chose Madden over Summerall here.
Grade: B-
6) TBS' Saturday Evening Match Up is a quality broadcast.
Grade: B-
7) ABC's 2:30 (CST) Saturday Regional match up is usually a high qualilty boradcast. Brent Musberger does a nice job of adding excitement, Brad Nessler is ok too. Some of the others are not so good, but overall ABC does a nice job with this game.
Well, those are the best telecasts in the industry. There are, however, some telecasts that are worth mentioning due to their pizz poor quality and ability to turn even an exciting game into a snoozer.
The absolute worst telecasts are those found on some of the ESPN Plus broadcasts. These are typically matchups like North Texas and Louisiana Monroe. They're very low quality, but if you've got money on one of these games, at least they're televised.
Next up from that is anything involving Fox. Don't confuse this with FoxSportsSW or any of their other regional college games. I'm talking about Fox and the NFL. These guys are absolutely horrible. Poor camera angles. The worst announcers. Just because a guy played football and knows a lot about the sport, it doesn't mean he'll make the game any more interesting. Sound guality is terrible. These guys just need to relinquish their NFL contract and get out of the business. Troy Aikman??? Give me a break.
CBS' NFL is just a notch above Fox. BORING! Terrible camera work. Terrible stadium atmoshpere. Horrible announcers. And that annoying music they play with the cynphony instruments. It's a horrendous job.
