In 2000, the best pitcher in baseball was Pedro Martinez. It wasnt even close. Here are his stats from that season:

18-6 1.74 era and a .74 whip. He also had 284 strikeouts to only 32 walks.

Eric Bedard, who some are throwing in the best pitcher in baseball, 2007 stats were

13-6 with a 3.16 era and a 1.09 whip. 221 strikeouts to 57 walks.

Can you see why I think its funny that Eric Bedard is even being mentioned? Can you see why I think pitching is down?

FWIW, Johan's two Cy Young years he had an ERA in the mid 2s.

I would add, though, that Bedard is trending upward and could become one of the best pitchers in baseball. IMO, he needs to lower the ERA and increase wins before he should be mentioned.

I really dislike the 5 mins deadline on editing posts.

Beckett, ask yourself this, game 7 of the series and every pitcher in baseball is available to you healthy. You choose beckett no doubt, not santana, peavy, halladay, bedard. If you say other then beckett your lying.

A pitcher cannot control wins, those are a product of his team (Cole Hamels Wednesday for example). Bedard facing the A's and Rangers more and less Yankees/BoSox will help his ERA.

its Santana and there is no debate.

Thread Closed.

There is a debate.

Both opened the 2008 season strong.

Last season Peavy (on a weak hitting team) went 19-7, ERA of 2.54 (incredible ERA+ of 159) in a league that averages 4.04, had a stellar ratio of 1.061, K'd 240 in 223 IP's.
Peavy also made each and every of his 34 starts, finished 7th in the MVP voting and won the Cy Young.

Last season Santana went 15-13, ERA of 3.33 (good ERA+ of 130) in a league that averages 4.54, had a ratio of 1.073, K'd 235 in 219 innings.

Right now, as of April 3rd, the best pitcher in the majors Peavy.

Casual baseball fans on the east coast don't realize how dominating Peavy is because he plays 3400 miles away.

For the record. Josh Beckett will oppose Roy Halladay, Jays Sunday.

Josh Beckett was deemed ready to start his season after pitching a final intrasquad game at the minor league complex in Fort Myers, Fla. Beckett missed Japan. Who cares? He missed Oakland. No big deal.

He apparently is ready to pitch, according to Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona, against Toronto Sunday, opposing Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay — one of the most formidable pitchers and teams the Sox will face this season the Boston Globe reported.

This is no small bit of news, for Beckett is the biggest weapon that separates the Sox from the pack. If there's a "filthy" pie chart for elite American League pitchers, Beckett gets the biggest slice. The only one who comes close is Halladay, who is a horse, of course, but hasn't been in position to pitch a big postseason game

His stats are affected because of playing in the best hitters park in the majors but Jeff Francis is really a damn fine pitcher. Top 20 overall.

Dont give me that crap. He avg 6.5 innings per start. Throw more innings if you want more wins. He got 10 no decisions to 13 wins because he didnt work long enough. Further, I wonder if his ERA wouldnt have been a lot worse with working an extra inning a game.

Thru August '07 (Bedard was hurt and didn't pitch in September)

Bedard - 28 GS 13-5 182 innings 141 hits 221 K's 57 BB 3.16 ERA
Peavy - 27 GS 15-5 178 innings 133 hits 197 K's 54 BB 2.18 ERA

Now consider Bedard pitched in a hitters park, with the DH, in a division with Boston and NY (who he owned last year), and doesn't have the benefit of a great bullpen to protect his leads. Pretty close if you ask me.

No mention of Halladay?

He's still got pretty good stuff and he can shut down pretty much any AL lineup (except when playing the Rangers in Texas)
i think peavy is the best, but they dont call halladay, doc for nothing.:toast:

a lot of different ways to come at this.

peavy probably has the best stuff.
santana is probably the best pitcher.

and then when you talk about who you want on the mound if you had to win ONE game, and i think thats pretty cut and dry:

josh beckett.
who is the best big game pitcher of this new generation.

baseball is ultra subjective though.
i think the best big game pitcher is john smoltz.joh is getting up in age,but hes still got the stuff.:toast:

Is he a 7 inning pitcher because of his coach? Most pitchers today are 7 inning pitchers. San Diego's stadium is also a pitcher friendly park.
i agree, the day of the complete game is almost gone.i dont blame managers of having pitch counts on their pitchers.a starting pitcher today pitches6 ,7 innings, middle relief ,maybe 7,8and the closer 9.

This would have been a good poll question...Since gamblers talk with their wallets, I will take Josh Beckett. Probably Santana second and Peavy third. Halladay is the most overworked pitcher of the lot and anyone who has to pitch in the American League will always have a statisical disadvantage.

Don't laugh when I say this but there's a young kid in Seattle named Felix Hernandez that is pitching lights out baseball. Remember the kid is only 22 and completly dominating AL hitters right now with a 1.47 ERA. He's 2-0 but should be 3-0 if the pen didn't blow one in the 9th.

This kid will be phenomenal for years to come. He throws very hard and has a nasty curveball and can locate. If Bedard comes up big this 1-2 punch could be the best in baseball.
