Best of 5 in the first round huh?

This is one thing I don't get. You play 162 games and in the first round of the playoffs its a best of 5 series? A team who wins 110 games and loses 52 games can lose in the first round so what was the point of playing all these games? I feel like best of 5 is giving a team so little room for error.

Note I am not saying this b/c I like the Cubs and they are down 2-0 right now. It is just that any team in baseball can lose on any given day of the week. Basketball as well but much less likely than baseball. Baseball is the only sport i say any team can beat any team. Football obviously is a different story which makes sense why every playoff game is an elimination game.

I mean if you look at game 1 of any series, if you lose game 1, you are in deep trouble. When you lose 1 game, you need to win 3 out of the 4 games left. It puts WAY too much pressure on any team. Yes i know that is what the post season is for but come on... best out of 5 in the first round. That gives little room for error.

Even in the NBA the first round is best out of 7 games. Why should baseball not be the same? There are way too many variables in a baseball game as oppose to an NBA game.

You see, when Brewers and Cubbies lose the 1st game of their series, they are already in trouble. When they both lost the 2nd game, they are basically close to being done. Now they both need to win the last 3 games of their series.

If it was best out of 7 in the 1st round, then we get to see who is the better team in a 7 game span. Why do they play best out of 7 games in the league championships and the world series whereas they only play best out of 5 in the first round?

I have been questioning this for the last 7-8 years when watching baseball real closely. This gives no team any margin for error.

Secondly, the cubs had the best home record the entire year, and everyone and their mother loved dempster every time he was at home.....Guess what, hes still ryan dempster, the guy who used to gas can 3 and 4 run leads every other outing 2 years ago.......


If the cubs played similar to their performance this year at home, it would be dodgers backers who'd be saying its not fair. Try not making an error at every position in the infield, and u might have a case for moving on to the next level.......

They, and You have business expecting a win making 4 erros in a game, and with kosuke fukodome starting games.......piniellas knows he isnt right, and hes tinkering at playoff time?

No Zeke Taylor. Didn't you see the point i made about i don't like the Cubbies. I actually like the Dodgers to win more than the Cubs b/c of Manny and Lowe and want to see Red Sox versus the Dodgers in the WS.

I just think this makes every game a must win. 7 games... you have some room for error.

It is beyond stupid. Baseball should really play best of 9 or 11 series. Best of 5 in the first round just turns the regular season into a mockery.

Why they haven't changed the first round to best of 7 is mind boggling. Teams play 162 games only to participate in a virtual crap shoot in the first round.

And then baseball complains when some useless wild card team makes the world series.

It's a yearly travesty and a joke. Knowing MLB it's going to take them forever to figure out.

Some of the issues you didn't even mention are that it rewards a team that has 2 great starting pitchers but no depth (not really a factor in this years set of games, but usually it is).
It also usually gives an advantage to the wildcard teams since they're the hottest coming in.

How a team wins their division and then has 5 games (maybe) to show their stuff is a joke. I never understood the whole speed the game up/don't have the playoffs drag on arguement. Don't effing watch baseball then if you don't love it! Right?

Stupid basketball let's a 1 vs 8 seed go 7 games....but baseball has 2 Division winners get best of 5 after playing 162 games. Shorten the season by 2 games if you must! Anything to correct it.

Last point. There's no guarantee just because it's a 7 game series that it will go 7. It could still go 5, 6 or whatever. So it's no sure thing it gets dragged out. But if it ends up going 7 then guess what.....it's 2 evenly matched teams that deserve a fair length series.

I really don't have too much of a problem with it. It gives the better team more of a shot of advancing then football does with a one and done situation. Obviously I'm not saying football should have a best of 3 or 5 series because that is just ridiculous, but if you're the better team and want to advance then win 3 or 5. Not too difficult of a task imo, especially when you have home field in the playoffs. They are just flat out choking and you can't blame that on the playoff format.

I mean in terms of how much one game proves a teams superiority. When the best teams in baseball lose 40% of the games they play over a 162 game schedule it means you need more games then say basketball, football or soccer to determine a worthy winner.

Almost no other sport does one game mean any less in proving a superior team then baseball. Thus you need a longer series to determine the better team. In theory if the NBA and NHL use 7 game series then the MLB should use 11/13/15 game series. Of course nobody wants to drag the post season out that long and for entertainment purposes it would lose drama to do so.


I don't pretend to have all the answers but at the very least the first round should be 7 games. There's no real reason to have it 5.

Anyone who loves baseball will tell you they'd like to have baseball year round. Stupid question.


Now a 9 or 11 game series isn't really what anyone is looking for....but best of 7 should be mandatory and a no brainer.
