The making of a Minnesota suicide bomber

May 12, 2009 Posted by Scott at 9:31 PM

We have written several times about Shirwa Ahmed, the Somali immigrant to Minnesota who returned to Somalia to wage jihad. On a mission from Minneapolis, Shirwa Ahmed killed 29 people in a suicide bombing in northern Somalia last October. Our posts on Ahmed are collected here.

Because it is feared that Ahmed's case may be representative of those of other Somali immigrants who have disappeared from the Twin Cities to receive training in jihad in Somalia, it has created concerns among law enforcement int the Twin Cities. Indeed, Ahmed's case has given rise to a federal investigation and related grand jury proceedings.

Last week the Minneapolis Star Tribune produced a useful profile of Ahmed in "The making of a Minnesota suicide bomber." The Star Tribune characterizes the investigation arising from Ahmed's death "one of the most far-reaching U.S. counterterrorism investigations since 9/11."

I couldn’t understand why Minnesota voters would elect a comedian to the Senate. But now I do understand….

ST. PAUL (WCCO) ―

The Legislature is entering its final week of the session. Lawmakers and Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty are billions of dollars apart on the spending plan for the next two years.

People who rallied Monday at the Capitol were concerned that without tax hikes, services they depend on will disappear.

Pawlenty vetoed the tax hike bill at the weekend fishing opener, comparing Democrats to a bucket of leeches on the taxpayers.

But hundreds attending a State Capitol rally said without tax hikes, poor and disabled Minnesotans will bear the brunt of brutal budget cuts.

"We are ready to invest!" chanted the crowd.

"It hurts me in here," said Sue Johnson of New Hope, referring to proposed budget cuts.

The rally purported to be non-partisan, but the powerful Democratic House Speaker suddenly appeared, signaling her intentions.

"You know what we need to do? We need to override [the veto]," said DFL House Speaker Rep. Margaret Kelliher.

Meanwhile, a coalition of liberal groups began a billboard campaign accusing Pawlenty of placing his political ambitions on the national scene above the needs of the state.

Conservative groups rallied around the veto.

"Cuts always hurt, but cuts are necessary because those dollars have to come from somewhere," said Pat Anderson with the Minnesota Free Market Institute. "Everybody has to share the pain, and these folks need to understand that, too."

Pawlenty sent DFL leaders a letter late Monday afternoon modestly cutting back some of his proposals. For the first time Kelliher responded by Twitter, calling it "no compromise at all."

Yahoo had one of their list the other day. This one was states with happy residents. Minnesota was in the top 10. Wisconsin was in the bottom 1/2.

Surprised me too.

Costa Rica rain is about 15-20 degrees Celsius warmer than Vancouver rain.

Vancouver was getting very expensive, even with the prices of homes dropping it's over half a million or more to get anything with a yard in the city limits

Be careful, I went to Vancouver for a 2 week vacation and it ended up lasting 15 years.

Make sure you take the trip to Vancouver Island and the Sun Shine Coast
