Belichick, Ryan start the war of words

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. – Sunday’s showdown between the Buffalo Bills and the New England Patriots is becoming much more than just a heavyweight battle on the field.

What’s being said in press conferences is quickly turning into must-watch stuff for NFL fans – even those outside of the Northeast.

The most evident sign of that? An unlikely source joined in.

The Buffalo media asked Patriots coach Bill Belichick Wednesday why Rex Ryan’s defenses have had success against quarterback Tom Brady in the past.

“I think our record against him has been OK,” Belichick shot back. “I’ll take it.”

Coming from other NFL coaches, that wouldn’t be a big deal. But from Belichick? It’s about as big of a burn as you’ll get out of Foxborough. And because Ryan has a reputation for being bold and brash when it comes to talking about the Patriots, the buildup to the matchup at Ralph Wilson Stadium has been almost as compelling as what fans will see on Sunday afternoon.

Your turn, Rex.

"It's easy to say the Patriots have been the most dominant team in the National Football League the past 10 years, but this year is a different year," Ryan said." I'm going to put that caveat out there. It's a different year and we'll see who is the king of the mountain at the end of this season."

For the record, Brady’s passer rating against Ryan’s defenses in his career is 88.9. That compares to an averag passer rating of 96.1 over the span of Brady’s 16 seasons in the NFL.
But most importantly, there are other numbers Belichick will gladly take.

Ryan, who previously coached for the New York Jets from 2009-14, is just 4-9 against Belichick’s Patriots, including a dismal 1-7 stretch since 2011.

“Well I dislike the fact that I haven’t been that successful against them,” Ryan said Wednesday. “No question. But I’ll say this: I respect them, probably as much as any team in the league. But I don’t fear ‘em, I can tell you that much. We don’t fear anybody. We’re looking forward to them.”

Ryan set the tone of the week Monday, when he intentionally inserted a playful jab at his long-time rivals.

“I can’t wait to see what our fans are going to be like when you have the hated Patriots – I mean this kind of rival – coming into our stadium,” Ryan said.

Buffalo’s players soon followed suit.

“I don’t like New England so yeah, it’s definitely personal for me,” safety Aaron Williams said.

“Don’t nobody like the Patriots,” defensive tackle Marcell Dareus added. “Let’s be honest about it.”

For his part, Brady says he’s not worried about what goes on off the field.

“It doesn’t matter to me,” Brady said Wednesday. “The games are won by what you do over the course of the week and how you go about your preparation so that you can be prepared for the game on Sunday.”

Rex kills me. He wins one game and he's already talking as though the Bills are going to the Superbowl. We know how that worked out for him in NY. I enjoy the fact that Rex isn't afraid to shoot his mouth off, but he often comes off as an idiot after his team lays an egg. Would love to see the Bills win on Sunday, but imo he's not doing his team any favors by yapping.

Rex definitely has more talent in the front 7 with Buffalo than he did with the Jets, Jets never really had that many playmakers upfront. Probably not as good of a secondary because Revis was unreal those first few years but Gilmore has potential.

War of words though? Seems pretty tame to me. War of words is when Clubber Lang was asked for his prediction for the fight.

Lol Rex taking a shot at the Steelers. Things are just more fun in the NFL when his teams are relevent.

"Obviously you don't just put one guy on this guy. That's been proven," Ryan said later Wednesday in a conference call with reporters covering the Patriots. "I will say this, it's better to put one guy on him than nobody on him. We'll try to have somebody on him, at least."

8-3, including 7 of the last 8

Pats score 27 or more 7 out of 11 games

I'll call a lot better than OK Bill, don't be so humble

Leave it to the fat guy. He beats one good team and he acts like he has an all time team. You are fat, you live in Buffalo, and you got lucky. The Colts will be playing in Janruary while you give a tough guy speech at the senior bowl.

Fat people suck.

Colts are soft and would be .500 if they played in the AFC East.
An 0-2 start is very possible this year.

Rex is like the Chael Sonnen of the NFL. He is pretty good but he isn't the best, yet he does a great job of promoting himself and his team.

Chael Sonnen was a UFC fighter that just retired, he fought for the title a few times and every single time he said he was gonna kick the guys ass, guy was overrated, punk needed to be taught a lesson, etc.....Obviously he never won but who cares, he had that swagger that people love to hate.

Rex's flame burns bright and fast

I actually think the Bills will make the playoffs this season and next. They'll begin to fade by year three and he's gone by year 5/6.

His team reflects his personality, and the lack of respect and discipline will eventually be his undoing

it's a Ryan family tradition

but I would take Rex as a DC anytime, BB would put a muzzle on him

You are crazy. You come to this prediction from week 1?

Luck alone equates to 10 wins a year. I don't give a shit what is around him. That is why the GM sucks.

Whatever happens in this game, and I think Buff is gonna win, Miami over Buff the following week is a good bet, even though I think Buff is a better team than Miami. They are expending so much emotion and energy for this game, next week figures to be a flat spot. That's the problem with emotional Coaches like Rex. His teams are prone to more emotional highs and lows than the usual, blase, even keel Head Coaches.

VLad, ur colts defense is soft and undersized.
Buffalo ran the ball right down their throats. The colts d line sucks.
