Johnny B said:tate, I have heard similar things as well. The way I always heard it was that each week after the lines were made (for the NFL) they were given out to a few sharps to look over before they were made public. These sharps could then place bets and the linesmakers would adjust their lines according to this sharp action before making them public. Not saying this is true, just what I have heard from various people on here at different times.
This is what alot of bookmakers have been doing for along time. This is what I'm saying though.
If Cris tells the sharp a game is -4 and the sharp lays the -4 and Cris makes the game -5 and then Cris opens the line -5. What is the real opening line?
Who cares who bet it? The game still opened -4! But Cris has to open the game -5 because they don't want anyone to know they let their buddys bet first. (that's what I call it) Anybody could have layed the -4, not just the sharp bettor they let bet first.
This is what the big dope at Cris did for years because he could never have made the opening line himself and had no clue if the game should be -3 or -5! He did it because he had no clue. Now a bookie with a clue would just open the game -5 and wouldn't need a sharp bettor to guide him on what the number should be.
I mean if you knew a game should be -6 or more then why in the world would you let someone lay -4? No matter who it was! That's not good business, but if you have no clue yourself you need to give away some of your profits to get the info that you yourself don't have because you have no clue.
And the bookmaker that did this had people thinking he was really sharp. That was 1 of the wildest things I ever witnessed in this business.
How can a man who has no Idea what the odds should be on an event be a good bookmaker?
