I'll admit I'm too young to really know who this guy is but after Mamatried mentioned him, I looked up a bit and he seemed like a pretty sharp fellow.

"However, on religious issues there can be little or no compromise.
There is no position on which people are so immovable as their religious
beliefs. There is no more powerful ally one can claim in a debate than
Jesus Christ, or God, or Allah, or whatever one calls this supreme
being. But like any powerful weapon, the use of God's name on one's
behalf should be used sparingly. The religious factions that are
growing throughout our land are not using their religious clout with
wisdom. They are trying to force government leaders into following
their position 100 percent. If you disagree with these religious groups
on a particular moral issue, they complain, they threaten you with a
loss of money or votes or both. I'm frankly sick and tired of the
political preachers across this country telling me as a citizen that if
I want to be a moral person, I must believe in 'A,' 'B,' 'C,' and 'D.'
Just who do they think they are? And from where do they presume to
claim the right to dictate their moral beliefs to me? And I am even
more angry as a legislator who must endure the threats of every
religious group who thinks it has some God-granted right to control my
vote on every roll call in the Senate. I am warning them today:
I will fight them every step of the way if they try to dictate their
moral convictions to all Americans in the name of 'conservatism.'

America is still going through the process of the State versus the church.

Most of Colonial America consists of religions who fled europe.

In the UK and the old British empire, including Canada the Church of England and the Catholic church have been subdued.

In Places like The new world, where there was a successful rebellion, known as the war of independence, they're still trying to sort themselves out.

Abortion for instance, is irrelevant in the west, unless you live in America.

When I first arrived in here, I was astonished at the size of threads about abortion.
It's a total non-subject in the UK.

EEK, it's actually a rather small minority of Americans who lose much sleep over the fact that women cannot be arrested, prosecuted and imprisoned in the event they terminate a pregnancy.

In fact, if not for the zealot anti-abortion cats that have murdered doctors and/or bombed abortion clinics, you'd hardly hear much social discussion on it all during the past 20+ years.

That's also what makes America great tho Barman.

We've killed 'em off where I'm at, and that's not necessarily a good thing.

Britains pretty kewl, but the variation in the species makes us stronger.
You have something we don't, whether you agree with it or not, it makes you stronger.

The more homogenous your society is, the weaker it becomes, and the easier it is for bad people, especially bad people who pretend to be good people, to crush your society.

vivé la difference.
