Why would you pass on 4th & 9 instead of taking the sure 3 points & trying to set up a game winning field goal?

it was San Diego /Carolina....


Carolina could have kicked the field goal & then hoped for a defensive stop....

as it stands they allowed SD to march down the field & score, but dont you think had they got the field goal the defence would have been charged up to give the ball back to the offence & try to get the game winning field goal...
