My grandfatherwas a colonel in WWI. My dad flew bombers in WWII. I guess at 19 I was naive. curious. In retrospect, maybe too many stories from my dad. What I saw, young guys, dead, missing limbs, horribly disfigured. Now I'm against the military industrial complex. The people that make money, by putting us in war situations. Spending our 'treasure' for profit, using up kids who don't know better. Or worse, kids failed by our education system, that don't have a lot of options. I don't blame the government. (THE WHOLE GOVERNMENT). FWIW, I believe JFK wanted us out of Vietnam, 1963, And that got him killed.
The estimates are we spent 170 billion on weapons and other materials, Just in Vietnam.. BUT>>>when you factor all costs, disability, death benefits, it reaches almost 1 trillion dollars. 3% of our national debt. And thats just vietnam. And the sad thing, the profiteers, the ones that make the money, don't pay a nickle for GI benefits, or any of the ongoing help programs for vets living in the street.
Lastly, GI bill put me through 3 years of med school. I'll be 80 this year, OLD GUY, but I can still start crying remembering guys I knew, went to school (in army) that were killed. 120 in our graduating class, 20 died in 2 mortar attacks. Mortaring hospitals where they worked. Or worse the people who were turned into monsters you couldn't look at.
Our country is the greatest in the world. The government doesn't mistreat anyone. People in government, that have lost their way, been turned by party loyalty or profit. They deserve our scorn.
My dream, is I will see a government that puts aside the thirst for power, and decides to put the people first and foremost. A lot has changed, government wise, just in my lifetime, I'm hoping we can find our way back.
bol 2 all.
