I know alot of you are old farts with back issues ;) but i wanted to share my experience with the laser spine institute/surgery. Ive had chronic lower back pain (almost in my left butt cheek) for several years, at its worst its crippling making me unable to stand/walk. I just turned 34, have a wife/4 kids at home, very active, run and work out regularly (obviously not when my back pain is severe), and am self employed with a pretty physically demanding job. I have met with many chiropractors along this process, ER visits, MRIs/X-Rays, specialty doctors, and neurosurgeons. The last neuro consult ended with his diagnosis being a 2 level spinal fusion, with the surgery requiring entry through both my stomach and back, he emphasized it was a major surgery with lengthy down time and would be a big decision for me to make. Needless to say that left me devastated and very reluctant with my future quality of life. Fast forward to a couple months ago meeting with the laser spine institute. The place is top notch, minimally invasive surgery, and have their own specialized procedure sounding too good to be true. I have a blown/ruptured disc at the base of my spine that gave the nerves in my spinal column very little room...of course any kind of physical movement aggravated that area/inflaming the back muscles around the nerves and pinched the nerves. Today I had my surgery at 11am this morning, they were able to shave off the herniation in my ruptured disc/remove fragments and debris, laser to disc to retract it back where is should be, gave the spinal nerve canal the room it needs to hopefully not cause me anymore nerve issues...all with an incision about an inch long I walked out of there at 2 oclock with just the biggest smile on my face...the Valium/drugs/anesthesia had warn off so it wasnt that! The nagging everyday pain is already gone and its just an amazing unbelievable feeling to have after all this time. I hate going to the doctor and am stubborn when it comes to things like that but being a father of 4 I felt like i had to do anything possible to maintain a quality of life to watch my kids grow up and remain active to be able to enjoy doing things with the wife. I just wanted to share in hopes it may be able to help someone as an alternative they may not have known about because all I heard prior to back surgery was horror stories and little/no relief... :toast:

I also have problems with my back (severe stenosis foramina bilaterally and narrowing at L5 & S1). I couldn't stand for more than 5 minutes before doubling over in pain. So I have a decent idea what you went through. I'm going to try my best to avoid surgery. I just had my first steroid shot to the back at the Oklahoma Spine Center and getting ready to through therapy. Right now I'm feeling much better after that shot. Like you, I've also heard about the back surgery horror stories. Everybody is different, but any way you look at it, it's a gamble. I wish you nothing but the best. It sounds like it worked! Great news...

Same thing for me man. Could not run, stand up straight, drive etc. It was a crippling injury. I know how you feel. Took the shot, pain killers everything.

I had a discectomy and a year later, I was G2G. Wish I would've had the laser surgery but I'm good so no worries.

Does your insurance cover laser surgery? I had a nurse tell me that not everybody's does because it's a fairly new procedure...And very expensive

Thats exactly the same location that i had my operation. Thats great you responded so well to the shot, I don't wish that kind of pain on anyone. That feeling of helplessness is the worst. Yes insurance does cover it, my wife works at a hospital and were pretty fortunate to have a really good plan.

Starting to have pain in the exact location. The shot covered it up for awhile (several months) but it's back again. Do you have to be referred to them or can I go there first visit? I'm sure my insurance will cover it. Thanks for sharing your study! I hope the pain stays away for you...

The pain in the leg hurts worse than the back.

You do not need a referral...they need a MRI (within the last 6 months, they will also require you to get another one the 2 days before surgery if you choose to do it) to let you know if they think you would be a good candidate. Consultation is free also...they have pretty awesome technique that they use involving tubes. They start with a small tube to stretch between your back muscle, then overlay a bigger tube, then bigger tube, until they have the space needed to get to your spine with their device (this keeps them from having to actually cut your back muscle and greatly reduces down time/pain). They xray your back a couple more times while they are doing this to make sure they are where they need to be with their equipment and start the procedure...the surgery took an hour to complete and I have yet to need any pain medication...total out of pocket will be 8k with my insurance but they only needed you to fulfill your deductible up front. Let me know if you have any other questions
