many times lower back pain can be corrected simply by heat and ice. Have seen it many times where a person can not take a normal step pain free due to muscle strain, little fire and ice, it is fixed.
But if considering surgery, must be disc or spinal allignment issue?
I'm sure this has been spoken of before...

I've been going to a Chiropractor since I was a kid... which thinking about it now, not sure I would ever let me 12 y/o go .... but yeah, I've given it a try... I could make an entire thread my experience there... 1. Why is everyone different? I've probably been to 20 of them in my life and don't thnk any of them been the same, use the same stuff... I hate the electro stuff they hook up to you.... 2. They are probably as expensive of a doctor in the long run... the last one, who was the last straw recommended I see him 3 to 5 times a week for 3 months! That's insane...
Not to say they havent done me good in the past. I use to get alot of neck pain in my HS football playing days. It was leading to migraines (true migraines not like bad headache) My chiro discovered that those 3 muscles that run down each side of your neck were way to tight. I rarely every have pain in my neck or shoulders... And I haven't had migraines in years...
However, my lower back is out of control. I've always had a "bad back" but the last straw was when I was bartending. I slipped.. I didn't fall, just slipped and caught myself. Didn't think much of it.. the next morning I couldn't stand. Literally rolled out of bed and had basically crawl to the bathroom...
Ever since then my back will "flare up". You can feel/ see the immflamation in my back. Normally 2-3 times of year. Can't walk, can barely stand during this time...
I thought it was getting better, most in 2012 my back did pretty good. 2013, it seems every week it's hurting although I only had one small "severe" flair up that lasted just 24 hours....

Defying, how old are you and how long have you been in such pain?
I'm 38, and I was in a similar situation a few months ago. I injured my back while lifting weights last May ('12), and was in a great deal of pain for about 7-8 months. It got to the point where I thought I was going to have to have surgery. I tried a chiropractor for several months with minimal results.
What helped me most with the pain was stretching (isolating lower back), heat, ice, and hill sprints. These got me to the point where I was 80% healed. Now, I'm on a mission to strengthen my lower back/core, which I neglected throughout my years of lifting. Basically, I started out with very light weight and have increased it each week. I still have a long way to go, but I power-cleaned 205lb and deadlifted 365lb last week. Those aren't great numbers relative to what I've done in the past, but I'm getting there. I weigh approx 180. Also, if you have access to a gym, I would strongly recommend using a hyper-extension machine. These are great for isolating the lower back.
Here is a great video to get you started with some good stretches if you'd like to give them a shot:
