The trip was a big learning experience. You read a bunch of stuff online about Vegas but there's some things you have to experience yourself.
First, there's a noticeable difference between the 5* and the 4* hotels. I don't know how someone concluded that the Hilton was a 4* hotel. It's a dump, it's old, it smells, and it's 10 minute monorail ride from anything fun.
Second, the city is incredibly expensive. You want to go somewhere? It's a $20 taxi ride round-trip. You want to eat something? It's $20 for a meal. Drinks are expensive unless you get them at the Sportsbook for free. Gambling limits are high. $10/$25 minimums for Blackjack everywhere.
It seemed a bit .... boring. There's nothing noticeably different about the activities you can do at the hotels. You gamble, you drink, you eat, you sleep, you go to the pool. It's not like if you go to Caesar's you're going to do anything different than if you were at the Bellagio. The machines are all the same. The games are the same.
Everyone in the sportsbook was a fat, old guy. And all of them were idiots. You try to talk to any of them about how they pick games. "Man, I just go with what I think". I sat down to watch the North Texas-Ball State game next to a guy who had Ball State moneyline. I had North Texas and the 17 points I didn't need. All game he was whining about how they made a bowl 2 straight years, how North Texas sucked, yada yada yada.
I see why books win now. People who bet... they're idiots. 1/2 the book was full of USC homers who would take them without even looking at the spread. You put up San Jose State +55 they would have taken USC. They're huge front-runners too. They only bet on the great teams. They took Florida, Ohio State, Penn State, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, all the top teams that were giving points. The points don't matter to them.
Also, where am I supposed to go in Vegas if I want to be around 20-year olds? I'm guessing next time I need to stay off-strip at the Palms or the Hard Rock and rent a car. This way I can save money on food, transportation, and be around people who aren't in their 50s. MGM wasn't too bad with the age thing, Hilton was awful.
