Many people have been impressed with the Dodgers' recent turnaround, one which will likely land Joe Torre's club in the postseason next week. Just don't count Hank Steinbrenner among them. Steinbrenner, the Yankees' co-chairman, ripped Major League Baseball's divisional system in a column in this week's Sporting News, saying that the format allows teams to make the postseason even if their records don't warrant such an honor. "The biggest problem is the divisional setup in major league baseball. I didn't like it in the 1970s, and I hate it now," Steinbrenner wrote. "Baseball went to a multidivision setup to create more races, rivalries and excitement. But it isn't fair. You see it this season, with plenty of people in the media pointing out that Joe Torre and the Dodgers are going to the playoffs while we're not. "This is by no means a knock on Torre - let me make that clear-but look at the division they're in. If L.A. were in the AL East, it wouldn't be in the playoff discussion. The AL East is never weak."

He does kind of have a point. The Yankees could easily win the AL West while the Dodgers would be 3rd or 4th in the AL East.

Yeah, but he didn't have any problems with the system last season and all the one's before that when they were winning the division. Timing....

He also didn't have a problem with it when the Yankees made the playoffs in like 2000 when there were teams in other divisions with better records that didn't make it because the AL East was down that year. Funny how they only have a problem with these rules when it works against them.

You also don't see teams like the Rays, O's and Jays bitching that they have to play in a division with teams that spend double the money they do, or with the Yankees something like 10x the amount the Rays do. THAT is what is actually unfair, not the shit the Yankees want to bitch about.

When you spend the most money in the MLB by a mile you have nothing to bitch about. Truth is the Yankees should be in the playoffs EVERY SINGLE YEAR with the money they spend. A down year for them should be not winning the World Series. They are massive underachievers for the amount of money they dish out.

I'm the biggest Yankee fan on the boards, and I can't stand the fat blowhard.
Fired Torre (call it what you want, but he fired Torre) and now he's mad at him for winning with the Dodgers.

ummmmm, isnt it kinda unfair that the yankees are allowed to spend over 200mil. + on players while teams like kc can only afford a 30 mil. payroll.

But he has no problem with the no salary cap rule, because that unfairness benefits his team. People only like to point out unfairness when it hurts them, but never say a word about the ones that benefit them.

If you cant compete with tampa with a 200 mil pay roll can you really blame anyone but yourself?

Same here, diehard Yanks fan, but he is a dumb as his old man was early on. He should just keep his mouth shut, but he won't.

BTW--It figures the Yanks get hot this late in the season when it means absolutely nothing. Where were they in August when they needed to win? It burns me.

He (Hank) reminds me of Fredo Corleone. Skipped over for the Son-in-Law.

Every time I read a quote from him, I think of the scene where Fredo is telling Michael "I got skipped over, I'm not dumb like everybody says".

Basically agree. The Yanks can't complain about a system that allows them to take advantage of the obvious financial benefit they gain by playing in the NYC market.

However, KC can afford more than $30M (actually, $58M). There are several mega-rich owners who simply refuse to spend money.
