I'm the Commish in my main league. All of us are good friends, competitive.. everything Fantasy football should be.

Thinking about making it an Auction Draft this year instead of snake like the previous 5+ years.

Anyone done the auction, thoughts? Suggestions to make it run smoothly.

If you are doing a snake draft, this is how we run ours (no keepers) -
)
12-team league - each person picks a card Ace low, no king). Instead of the person picking 1st who has the Ace, they get the 1st choice of where they want to pick. 2 gets the 2nd choice of drafting position.... It adds much more strategy as the person holding the A may want to draft 5-6 instead. This is where preparing pays off.

Auction is waaaay more exciting..more strategy involved with budgeting and stuff. Auction takes longer though.

Auction for sure....You can get anyone you want as long as you pay up. Free market at its finest rather than someone starting out with AP or McCoy because their name got pulled out of a hat 1st.

Also if your mad you missed out on slavery, the bidding process makes you feel nostalgic for a time you never got to experience...

If you want more of a competitive draft try the Auction... I find these to be really fun with way more strategy involved. I have done very well over the years with these as it allows you to swing the draft in many ways. I for the most part sit back and let guys spend money early and it hurts to have to watch a guy or 2 you are really high on get scooped up but the rewards can pay off later. We take the top 25 players by yahoo ranking and toss them in a bucket and the next 25 etc... With bucket 1 names are randomly drawn and bids start. We also allow each player one Blind Bogey which a person before a name is drawn from the bucket can call blind bogey. This allows everyone to bid and the highest bidder gets to call the player he wants that hasn't been pulled yet. We only allow blind bogeys to be called after every 2 names drawn.

We all bring $100 in cash. You pay what you spend on players and I have been able to field solid teams for $50 bucks while everyone else will be all in on their $100.

So Bucket 1 is (yahoo) top 25 overall
Bucket 2 is (yahoo) next top 25 overall
Bucket 3 is all defense and kickers in which some guys buy while others just wait till the end. (This bucket goes really quick as maybe 8-10 defense bids go in as some guys buy into a defense and maybe 2-3 kickers go for 2-4 dollars)
Bucket 4 is (yahoo) next 25 overall
After that it's a silent Auction for guys who have any money left and you then reward highest bidder with player of his choice.

I like to sit back and invest in 2-3 players and keep track of what teams have what players. If I don't have a qb and say in bucket 2 Stafford comes out I will bid against a person who already has a qb (Brees) as they will bid to drive up the price forcing me to spend more money. Then when I think it's at a value it will go higher I quit bidding and try and stick the guy with 2 qb's. This will drive a guy nuts and piss him off and stick him with maybe 50-60% of his money invested in 2 qb's. Therefore he is on a tight rope with remaing players and you can easily out bid them for great value players for $3-$4

I will always field a full team and find value to try and trade players later. I have seen guys walk away with a team of just 3-4 players. stud qb, wr and rb with no more than 5or 6 bucks left to draft with. So within the first 15 minutes of the draft they are done for the most part till the $1 players come out at the end of the draft.

It's like a game of poker... You go all in sometimes, bluff and even have to know when to fold on the price sometimes...
