We've examined the strength of schedule on all of the bowl games this year. With a few exceptions, the team with the better SOS covered the spread. Auburn has a SOS ranked at 20 while FSU is ranked at 63.
Many of us have watched both of these teams over the past year. They are both explosive teams each possessing unique qualities.

There are many posts that exemplify these qualities so I'm not going to dwell on them. Feel free to read them.

Based strictly on SOS I would have to lean with the 10.5 pts with Auburn tonight. SOS has been very good to me during this bowl season.

My spread sheets show that teams with an SOS advantage went 17-17 ATS. The 3 teams with the largest SOS advantage on my spread sheets all won ATS (N Carolina, Miss St, and Pitt.) I also show Auburn with an SOS advantage tonight. Teams in that same range are 0-4 ATS.

Teams with the schedule advantage are 21-10 SU and 18-13 ATS in bowl games. The three largest schedule advantage teams were USC, Pitt, and Miss State (followed closely by Wash State who lost).

Oklahoma was the only team to have a schedule advantage and be a DD dog.

good post.

I think the point is - anyone can dig up stats/trends to support/justify their lean.

:think2:

Can you elaborate russ? Because Oklahoma played a tougher schedule than 'Bama and was a DD dog and won outright. Do you mean the range of the schedule gap?

Florida State is the third-largest favorite in BCS national championship game history. Both previous double-digit underdogs – Ohio State (+12) vs. Miami in 2003, and Oklahoma (+11.5) vs. Florida State in 2001 – won outright.

Here’s a look back at the lines, totals and results for the 15 championship games of the BCS era.
