This is a scary last name.....I'm thinking his ancestors, like his great, great, great grad dad worshipped Satan, so he named himself that? Can't think of any other reason why someone would have started a family name like that.
It's a Slovak name (he was born in Czechoslovakia, when it was a unified country). And, it has an accent over the "s" and is pronounced "Shahtan."

Judaism throughout history doesn't even have a concept of the "devil" or "satan" as we know it.
