Is it just me, or are athletes less apt to play injured compared to years ago?

Rondo is going to cost the Bulls the series against Boston, because of his thumb.

In contrast, I remember Larry Bird playing with mangled fingers on multiple occasions.

Kevin McHale broke his foot late in the season in 1987, and doctors told him if he kept playing
it could be career ending. He went ahead and played through the playoffs anyway, and
the Celtics made it to the NBA finals against the Lakers.

I don't know the specifics of Rondo's injuries, maybe it's not feasible for him to play.

[ Larry fractures his cheekbone when his face slams against the floor, and it can't keep him out of the game ]
