WASHINGTON (AFP) - A snap poll taken just after the second US presidential election debate said Senator John Kerry (news - web sites) narrowly beat President George W. Bush (news - web sites) by 44 to 41 percent.

<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="1%" align=left border=0><TBODY><TR vAlign=top><TD width="99%"><CENTER><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width=150 border=0><TBODY><TR vAlign=top><TD><CENTER>

Thirteen percent of respondents to the ABC News instant poll said the two tied in their town-hall style debate at Washington University in St Louis, Missouri.

Kerry and Bush renewed hostilities over Iraq (news - web sites) Friday with the Democrat accusing the president of turning his campaign into a "weapon of mass deception" while the Republican said Kerry was dangerously fickle on security.

In front of a television audience of tens of millions of Americans, the two contenders took questions from an audience of 140 voters who said they had not settled on a candidate with less than a month to go before the November 2 election.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And as I've said from Day 1, it is going to be a dead heat, razor thin race on Nov. 2.

Gameface, even your brethren on Faux News think Kerry won the debate...

<!--StartFragment --> Mort Kondracke: "... I think Kerry won this debate as he won the first debate I don't think... I thought that Kerry was much more aggressive and the president was basically on the defense and didn't have new arguments didn't have...wasn't as facile as he should have been."

Bill Kristol: "I guess I think if you think the President was doing okay and didn't need a win in this debate, he did fine, but I think, if one thinks that Bush missed an awful lot of opportunities to go after Kerry in the first debate he had to make some of them up in this debate, I'm not sure he really succeeded in doing so."

Brit Hume: "Is it now fair to say that in each of these debates in terms of marshaling arguments, and remembering them and presenting them that this is something John Kerry has proved he is very good at. And that it doesn't play to the president's strong suit."
Mort Kondracke: "I thought [Kerry] was very effective. I thought that he was also on the attack a lot and frankly I thought that the President seemed to be on the defense a lot and trying to explain things and not explaining them all that well."

NBC’s Tom Brokaw: "Well, I Think that the President stepped up his game tonight, and I think that he came with a game plan in mind, and tried to execute it on that stage."

ABC's George Stephanopoulos: "I Think President Bush was most effective, is when he brought people into the Oval Office, talked about meeting with the Iraqi Finance Minister, talking about going to the Situation Room and talking to General Tommy Franks, and then, finally, also, bringing up Senator Kerry's Senate record. But you did see, I think, a lot of skill out there tonight."

USA Today: "Bush appeared more relaxed and forceful."

The New York Times' Katharine Q. Seelye: "The format served [President Bush] well. He looked comfortable and sounded confident."

NBC's Tim Russert: "George Bush was more energetic."

New York Times columnist David Brooks: "So I think overall, the effect of the debate will to be to give the Bush campaign a boost."

Columbus, OH Undecided Voter Lisa on CNN: I was kind of on the border, but after hearing both candidates tonight, I think that I've kind of swayed over to Bush's side."

The Weekly Standard's Stephen Hayes: "I would say that President Bush won the debate, and for me, it was actually a rather decisive win."

Kerry can no longer hide from his dismal 20 years in the Senate, it's over for Kerry.

I thought Bush won because Kerry was lying through his teeth again. I am surprised the early polls has Kerry winning. Makes me wonder if Bush is losing the confidence of the American people.

I thought Bush easily covered the spread in this debate, which is all he had to do. He may have won the debate outright, but it was a draw to me. He won himself some votes tonight, no doubt. Who does John Kerry think he is, saying that nobody in that 140 person audience makes 200K a year? I thought that was a very insulting comment, and just shows the arrogance this guy has.

Rob,

Do you have a clue? 15% of wage earners pay 80% of all federal taxes. Which means a couple that earns over 90K, which could be a nurse and a fireman. I hate to break it to you, but 90K for a family is far from rich. If you don't believe me go to the IRS website and read. If you believe the senator is not going to raise taxes on the nurse and fireman to pay for these spending plans you are sadly mistaken.
