2 dollar Larry booked out of an old Fina station...he had a drop safe and people came by and paid and he took the cash and dropped it right into the ground.

Back when 200 was close to a months salary for most.

u meet a guy with a rubberband around his wad...u have met a guy with stories

When I was betting serious money, when we had a hot one, we used to say, "it's time to snap those rubber bands!" And the reason for the rubber bands?
It was hard to pickpocket you because the rubber bands caused friction against your pants pocket! That's the real reason for having rubber bands around your "roll''!

And speaking about those small transistor radios and TV's without remotes. I lived in Joisey and was a super NY football Giants fan. In those days the NFL blacked out all games....even the playoffs....whether the games were sold out or not. So when the Giants games weren't shown, I'd have to climb up on my roof and turn the antenna so I could pick up the broadcast out of Philly. When I got older, my friends and I would drive to somewhere in Pennsylvania so we could pick up the game with a better picture.

In Jersey the mob used to control most of the books. My Uncle was one of them and worked out of a "social" club based in Newark. Anyone out there remember Jake "Scar"?

I recall dong plenty of that type of betting in my younger days, betting on things like what individual batters will do and even what will happen on the next pitch. An oldtime bookie taught me an easy way to make money off greenhorns who wanted action. You offerd to bet after a count goes to 3 and 2, then bet that the next pitch will result in a foul ball. Believe me it happens a lot, next time you watch a game keep track of the stat. You could even offer odds like your $3 to their $2 and still make money with that one.

Logically it makes sense because you have a pitcher who is trying hard to be around the plate and a hitter who is trying equally hard to protect that same plate.

wil.

Interesting call WIll. I already know that is a good one. Hey I would just hang around and wait for great odds on a comeback, knowing the bullpens etc....being smart. Be patient and smart the opportunities will arrive and go could probably get some great odds.

I really enjoy these types of threads. I have nothing to offer, but plenty to read (listen to).

Born in Bayonne, sure as hell do.

I used to work for an idenpendent 'office'
I was a laison. I did most of the leg work, collected, delivered, that sort of stuff.
We had one bettor that I brought in, name was Ed, 5 dime a game wagerer. Cash money. In the 80's that was huge !
I told the office, "can you handle it?, they were so pleased they'd cut me 10 % of all losses.
He bet the pigskin, hit his first 13 games (no shit) in his first three weeks.
The office gave me 20K in 100's in a brown paper Shop and Stop bag.
Ed was pleased with the service and 'tipped' me 500.
Same with the next week, he hit I think 3 college and 3 pro, 5 dimes each game, duked me another 500.
I was in heaven, if he lost, the office would give me 10 % (which I didn't see yet, because he is now plus, 40 thousand or so.
Week 3 he went like 4-4 or 5-5 something like that. The office was getting croaked to the point Ed almost put them out.
I delivered the 3rd sack in 3 weeks, Ed is up 65K and to this day 23 years later he says to me "Billy, Billy, what should I do, I got the money to open my business"
I told him point blank, "Ed, if I was in your shoes, quit now, run, don't walk......."
Long story short, he gave back the 65K plus another 50K on top of that, and you know the rest..............

Sad.

id rather sit next to Doyle Brunson than some mit grad who spits out fn numbers every few seconds...

the house edge has gotten slighter over the years but the house still fn wins

theres a reason why the casino brass drive cadillacs and the players wake up to an alarm clock and carry a lunch pail to work

I guess Im old enough to fit the bill. First started by cutting school to play pool at the Palace in S.F. on Market street, upstairs. The owner was Bob Bills, and he gambled on everything. Owned racehorses. That got me started to going to the tracks in 1968 as a kid.

My 'CookieNBabe' handle is a dedication to two guys I became good friends with who were also among the biggest gamblers back when we all had nicknames.

I was young and didnt know it at the time, but just happened to walk into the thick of it back in the 70's. I realized then that the world was 99.5% squares.

I'll post a few old tales sometime.

true very few people can make a living from gambling alone...then and now...

the people i "old-timers" i am talking about were bookmakers......the successfull gamblers of old....were usually mechanics, dice players and such...hustlers if you will....

when football became big....bookmakers exploited both players and "soft" books......if you were fortunate to be around a sharp... you kept him close...using him to your advantage.....gl
