Are there any credit shops out that take action?

How do these places work? I read about them in a magazine, but the only credit places I know of are bookies. Are these the same?

Are credit shop transactions handled person to person? I've got to admit I only had experience with post up & a local guy & always hear about "credit shops" but really don't how they run.
