To Anyone that likes Apocalypse Now I'd recommend Hearts of Darkness

A documentary shot by Coppola's wife about the making of the movie, released in 1991.

movie went way over budget, typhoons destroyed the set, helicopters borrowed for production were snatched back to be used in an actual conflict

you get to see coppola obsess about the ending, the making of the opening scene with sheen, and brando avoid everything as flies in for the last 2 weeks of shooting to do his parts

unbelievable that such an incredible movie emerged from disastrous conditions. really would recommend the documentary as theres much more too it

One of my favorite all time movies. Hated Redux, though. In the original version, Willard is this mysterious, brooding bad ass that all the crew members on the boat fear. All the added scenes undermine that by showing him cutting up with the crew, giggling as he steals a surf board, getting them laid, hanging out with the widow at the plantation. What the fuck??

Usually you want to see the protagonist of a movie humanized and fleshed out, but here it just destroys the original Willard - a fucked up, dangerous, bad ass who has to find out what is at the end of that river.
