Sitting around $635. Have a buddy that bought at $1100, and again at $700. It has done nothing but drop since then. I myself think it's over inflated. Any more thoughts?

It might increase again, but it will probably crash and burn in some time (it may be months, it may be a few years).

The entire value of a bitcoin is determined almost entirely on speculation, so it's incredibly unstable.

Doesn't make sense to use offshore. Say you buy 1 coin in at Betlaspalmas(lol) and it was $600 a coin. They credit your account with $600. Then it tanks to $400, isn't the sportsbook out of $200 already if they didn't cashout instantly? That's what I don't get with the whole Bitcoin/Sportsbook future. Maybe I'm retarded, actually, I know I am

What if you buy it at 600 then it goes up to 1000?

The offshore just made out.

I couldn't agree more

Everybody is speculating. I wish I would have bought it when it was about $1 though.

its not stable at all, although tons of markets have no stability and people make money buying low and selling high.. this thing fluctuates down and then back up so often there is chances to do that many times over.. of course people like your friend keep buying and never sell at an avg high that makes them any money.. tough game for sure, but in 2 weeks or 2 months or 2 years he could make out if the thing ever "caught on" more mainstream...do I think it will, no.. but some people think so

Bitcoin is the way to go for sports bettors. It will replace the cash books as long as the government doesn't step in. I've been playing with them for some time now.

This is the reason I don't see it being a long term currency. For the few retailers that actually accept Bitcoins, their first move after receiving the Bitcoins will be to cash it in for dollars/euros, etc. if it was actually a legitimate currency, people would hold on to it for that purpose (i.e., to use as currency). As of now, it's purely a speculative investment. Any retailer with normal margins can't take the risk of the bitcoin dropping so sell immediately upon getting paid in Bitcoins. I just don't see it making the transition from speculative investment to actual digital currency.

It's much more than an investment. Sports bettors and poker players are switching to bitcoins. It's the perfect medium since it anonymous. You can exchange bitcoins for cash. You can buy and sell any time that you want and it's almost instant.

Serious question b/c I've never dealt with Bitcoins. I've heard a lot about the anonymity of Bitcoins. But ultimately to cash them out, aren't you going to have to go through a bank at some point? For example, if you got paid for something in Bitcoins or made a lot of money investing in Bitcoins, at some point you're going to have to get that converted to dollars and access it through a bank right? Therefore "big brother" is still gonna know about the bump in your bank account right? Sorry for the long question.

This page aims to be the best resource for new users to understand how to buy Bitcoins. The existing Buying bitcoins page is too complex.Read How To Buy Bitcoins With Your Credit Card, for information about buying Bitcoins with a credit card.
Warning: Please be careful with your money. When sending money to an exchange or seller you are trusting that the operator will not abscond with your funds and that the operator maintains secure systems that protect against theft -- internal or external. It is recommended that you obtain the real-world identity of the operator and ensure that sufficient recourse is available. Because Bitcoin services are not highly regulated a service can continue operating even when it is widely believed that it is insecure or dishonest and webpages recommending them (including these) may not be regularly updated. Exchanging or storing significant amounts of funds with third-parties is not recommended.
[h=3]******[/h]You can't directly buy Bitcoins using ******, because it is risky for the seller, and therefore few sellers will offer this. There are basically 3 reasons for that:

  • The buyer of bitcoins can always perform a chargeback and there is no way for the seller to contest that

  • There are many hacked accounts and when ****** realizes that such an account has been fraudulently used, they will also perform a chargeback

  • ****** doesn't like bitcoin, as the bitcoin network is in direct competition to it. They will ban accounts that have anything to do with Bitcoins, and freeze their balance.
Having said that there is a workaround that can be done in order to use ****** to buy Bitcoins but it holds within it higher transaction fees. Using the Virtual World Exchangeyou can buy Second Life Lindens (SLL) with ****** and then convert your SLL to Bitcoins. This process will charge you transaction fees of around 6% but will let you purchase Bitcoins pretty quickly as opposed to a wire transfer. The reason this method works is because you do not buy Bitcoins with ****** directly, you only buy SLL with ****** (which is acceptable by ******'s TOS) and then exchange your SLL to Bitcoin.
Note: If you only want to take advantage of Bitcoin's price volatility You can trade CFDs on Bitcoin via ****** on sites like AvaTrade or Plus500. When trading online your capital may be at risk. Trading CFDs is suitable for more experienced traders.
[h=3]Credit Card[/h]VirWox - The Virtual World Exchange accepts all major credit cards (via ****** or Skrill) and allows you to buy SLL which you can then trade to Bitcoin. Using this method is faster then most options but has larger transaction fees involved.

[h=3]Anonymity[/h]There is a huge demand for buying Bitcoins off the grid due to ever-increasing government regulations and private agency intrusions and discrimination against alternative currencies. Due to the possibility of facial recognition cameras at banks and the paper trail involved with credit cards, there are very few options to have high levels of anonymity when buying Bitcoins those ways. DNA, Fingerprints, phone and internet records, audio and video records will not be discussed, but they all are possible tools which attackers could use to uncloak even the stealthiest Bitcoin buyer. There are a couple known ways, depending on your location, to buy Bitcoins outside of the standard banking system with relatively high anonymity. Buying locally with cash using a burner or payphone allows a high level of anonymity with the exchange being the weakest link. Many sellers online will also trade Bitcoins for MoneyPak codes or other cash-like gift codes which can be bought at a local store with cash. Another way to buy Bitcoins with a high level of anonymity is by sending cash in the mail.

I believe that there will be "bitcoins" that are very prevalent in the next 10 years. I am just not sure if it will be actual bitcoins or one of their competitors. The idea is perfect for today's global marketplace. You are all correct though, it won't gain widespread use until the value becomes a bit more stable. Volatility does not matter for a medium of exchange (because you can buy and sell it immediately and not take any price risk), but it matters tremendously for a store of value.

If you believe that Bitcoin will be "the one" since it was first, the value is WAY undervalued, simply because by definition there will only be 21 million of them EVER created. Imagine if there were only 21 million dollars in circulation. We'd be buying houses with tenths of pennies. That means if this takes off, rather than buying 1 bitcoin, people will be buying 0.000001 bitcoins eventually, and whether you got in at $1, $400, or $1100 won't matter, you'll be very rich.
