Been thinking about moving there - heard good things. If anyone lives there or has lived there recently I could use some ideas of how the economy works down there, can I start with a relatively low-paying job in retail/service industry and afford to rent a place while I establish myself? Stuff like that.

Thanks,

You lucky dog. Move there if you can. Have been going back and forth trying to make up my mind for the last two years. Go twice a year for two weeks to Hilton Head area and Charleston . You can't go wrong. People are great, southern hospitality, great food, ocean, great downtown area. There is someone on here that lives there so maybe they will chime in.

I go there about 5 or 6 times every spring/summer to see a good buddy of mine... I love it down there. A lot of people don't really know about Charleston, but it is a FUN place, especially if you're "young."

Their nightlife scene (downtown Charleston) is 2nd to none. Plus, the chicks you'll see/meet are smokin hot (with C of C next door, and all). But like I said, the younger you are, the better/easier...

If you have the chance, definitely move down there.

As for jobs, their economy is geared mostly around tourism and the services industry (obviously), but cost of living is relatively cheap. Just get a place inland a few miles - like 15-20 minutes from the beach. Or, if you want to live in a beach town, rent a 2-3 BR place with another guy or 2, and you can find some pretty good deals.

I went to college there twenty years ago and still visit frequently as it is part of my territory for work. I know the job market is a little tough there now, but feel free to PM me and I could give you some more info.

As i said before , go before it is too late. I'm a lot older and while the town is geared for the younger crowd that hasn't scared me away. If anything, the only thing i don't like are the crowds downtown in the summer, but that is where the revenue is. If you play Golf it is fantastic. Maybe one the the guys that lives down there will chime in.

The biggest change for me will be the economy there - I'm not concerned about working retail (or in the service industry), but up here I've done fairly well for myself ($40k for being a department manager). But I'm assuming I'd be looking at a lot less down there.

I live here now. Greatest city there is. Celtic, PM me with whatever questions you have. I live 5 minutes from the beach down here, and hope to never move.
