Going to see the ENT on the 30th and it's looking like I might need to get my tonsils out. Looking for some experiences, if it was worth it.

Not quite an "adult", I was 17 and it was well worth it. It sucked, lost about 12 pounds (and I was skinny as it was!). I remember watching Fast Times at Ridgemont High on the VCR and started laughing so hard I had to turn it off because my throat couldn't handle it. I'm not sure if the technology has changed/improved since the late 80's but it took over a week to recover.

about a year or two ago (i was probably 33) I had my tonsils, uvula, and parts of my soft palate removed. I had a bad reaction to the morphine so I had no pain killers...it was pretty horrible for the first few days. I ended up losing 15 lbs cause I didn't really eat anything for the first week.

in the end it is worth it

I'm 39 should have had it done in my twenties but never did. Heard it's much more painful as an adult.

Had them taken out a few years back at 39 years old---

prett ypainful -- but helped stop the snoring. Had pretty bad sleep apnea -- I can dream again...

well worth it

30 years ago, I used to get a sore throat 3 to 5 times a year. id drive to emergency room to get a penicillin shot. I started a new job in the steel mill. I was on my 90 day probation at work when I got tonsillitis again. I went to the doctor and he said that the tonsils have to come out asap. I went to work the next day and I couldn't even eat jello. My supervisor calls me into his office. He said he had the same problem a few years ago. he said he started sucking on 3-6 cough drops EVERY day and never had a problem again. So I gave it a try. its been 30 years and I haven't had tonsillitis and haven't been sick at all in 30years. I have cough drops in my house, car and work. Its my drug of choice and works for me good luck on your decision.

about a year or two ago (i was probably 33) I had my tonsils, vulva, and parts of my ovaries removed. I had a bad reaction to the morphine so I had no pain killers...it was pretty horrible for the first few heavy flow days. I ended up losing 15 lbs but I still weigh north of 340 lbs.

in the end it is worth it

Glad you are better.

Getting them out tomorrow. Dr told me I'll be in and out the same day. I've never had surgery before so I have little anxiety about going under. Hope I get some good pain killers.

You are lucky ...Last year I was 55 and my appendix burst out of no where with no warning....The pain was severe...I was in the hospital for 6 days as there were some complications....Not being medically astute at first I thought the pain was just another kidney stone (Get those every few years). I go to a walk in Urgent Care Center and the Dr knew just where to pke to get a loud "ouch" from me.....He would not allow me to drive myself to the local hospital...After the operation the Dr tells me I was lucky i did not wait a minute longer as it could have been fatel

I believe the poster noonan had a similar situation to mine

Its due to constant infection, I'm supposed to be out the same day, but didn't think to ask exactly how long.

assuming laser removal-- results in as minimal trauma as possible and instant hemostasis. No sutures. Tissues heal quickly.

you may find this procedure improves quality of sleep (depending on size of tonsils) as the SIZE of the airway is improved; body better oxygenated. also if you're a snorer this MAY eliminate it.

Yeah mine are huge with crypts, from getting strep throat a lot. I get tonsil stones and the constant feeling like I have a splinter stuck in my tonsils.

geez. Well your airway just got larger with their removal, bloody hell, better oxygenation during sleep (the lower jaw often collapses during sleep decreasing the size of the airway, if one has 'huge tonsils' well space becomes a problem, breathing can be compromised-- person may snore, still feel tired in morning, mid-afternoon sleepiness.....etc)....

Is the RX Medical plan going to pay for this?

Do you have enough sick time accrued here yet?
