Since the preseason, Mark Sanchez has kept a relatively low profile.
The quarterback, who underwent season-ending shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum two months ago, has spent his time rehabbing, and on Tuesday he expressed interest in remaining a Jet beyond the 2013 season.
“It has been a dream come true to play here, and I don’t want to go anywhere else for sure,” Sanchez said via the
Newark Star-Ledger. “I know I have two years left, and I don’t ever want that to end. I love being a Jet.
“I plan on being here. That’s all I’m thinking about, is coming back next year, leading this team and playing well. We’ll see what happens.”
The Jets have quite the quarterback predicament on their hands. Rookie quarterback Geno Smith has spiraled the past few weeks and hasn’t shown the ability to operate an NFL offense on a consistent basis. While they invested a second-round pick in Smith just last season, it’s never too soon to pull the plug on a project in the win-now league.
As for Sanchez, this season has been a clear disappointment, but he believes he’ll appreciate everything even more once he regains full strength.
“I don’t wish this on anybody,” Sanchez said. “Not even your worst enemy, you don’t wish this on. It’s hard to be away. It’s hard to not be in the locker room, be on the plane, be on the bus. Little things like that. You just miss it so much. When I first came back it was a Friday. The next morning it was Saturday. I’m doing my rehab and you start to see everybody show up coming in their suits and stuff, getting ready to take off for a game, and that just kills you.”
