Don't get looked down by family and friends cuse I don't tell em.:103631605

If I did they either:

a) Would not believe me.:howdy:

b) Think I have become a degenerate in denial about my "gambling problem".:smoking:

Some things are best just left alone to the outside world:toast:

My mom just kind of rolls her eyes. My GF doesn't care, she just likes having a team to root for when I force her to watch random games. What is frustrating with her is that she is pissed when I have a losing month, and I get no love when I have a winning one. I could win $1500 one month, without even a "nice job" from her; but she sure does help spend the $$. Then the next month I'll lose $600 and all the sudden I am an asshole for gambling. WTF?

The males in my family generally show interest; they wanna know who I'm on, for how much, whether I'm having a good or bad day/month/year, etc.

Then again I have a 9-5er and gambling is not my primary source of income, not even close. I'm just a (slightly) successful hobby gambler, so my situation is much different than someone who does this for a living.

It amazes me how anti-sports betting the general public is. I'm not talking about anything other than sports betting. I have many family members & friends who view sports betting as a degenerate activity. I've been doing this since college (12 years all together now)...since I've gotten my shit straight and learned the game, the last 4-5 have been very profitable, yet I really can't share my joy with anyone other than myself, ok people like you guys too on message boards! I don't even like talking about it....it's like we are some nazi underground organization.

I have some "square " friends that gamble and they do the same dumb shit year in and year out and lose all the time, yet I am the fool b/c I bet so much or so often....it really is unreal. The others who dont gamble...forget about it! They all have a freaking story too......"I knew a guy who lost his house and his car over that stuff!" It really is ridiculous. Yet these same neophite hypocritical asshles play the lottery, play poker, buy those stupid ass scratch off lottery tickets, play bingo, and some even bet horses or dogs, but gamble on sports????? Gees...your looked down upon for life!

It has gotten to the point now that I don't even look at it at as gambling. I like to call it "Sports Investing." Hell, it applies the same basic principles as the stock market anyway for the most part. And above all else, it has been profitable to me! I just dont talk about it to anyone anymore win or lose....just easier that way. It is truly a different world we all live in though.......a world very deep underground it seems.

i agree, i call it sports investing. for me, its much safer than fucking stock market which is manipulated like hell by analysts. after doing poorly for a few years when i didn't know what the hell i was doing., i've done very well w/ sports investing for the last 6 years. the only people who know what i do are my immediate family and 3 good friends. thats it.
everyone else, thinks i'm a daytrader.

It's nobody phucking business IMO. It's my money that I earned and just as long as the bills are paid and my family isn't going without then I could care less what family or friends think. A funny short story: A friend of mine that doesn't gamble came over to watch the 1st half of the football game last night. When he asked me if I have any loot on the game, I told him I had the 1st half Eagles total to go over 9 1/2. He asked for how much and I told him 300 bucks, he almost fell out of his chair. That is the reaction most people who don't gamble would give when hearing something like that and $300 isn't a lot of scratch to most gamblers.

This is a very serious issue for our Southern posters.

It's very difficult to meet your better half when you're the laughing stock of the family reunion.

My wife has been SOOOO cool accepting gambling and who I am. She often plays too--but honestly could careless if she wins or loses. She accepts me changing the channel in the middle of a movie to see a play or waiting on dinner for an extra 10 minutes so I could get the evening action in--nobody could be more understanding. Hell--she took the kids to her mother's all by herslef yesterday because the Sox were in extra innings. However she was APPALLED yesterday when I told her that I bet on a Little League World Series regional action. We saw an ad on ESPN saying it was coming up and she was pissed that it at least wasn't the finals. I had to fib and tell her I had inside info a kid from Az threw 75 mph. Whats a guy to do???

whale, are you "scratch gambler" or better?

I'd imagine there's a huge difference between wives of guys in control, and wives of degenerate losers. Sure there are some overboard ignorant people everyone, but I mean on average.

She was been with me through the degenerate years. But I think she has been impressed with the switch to the "in control" gambler since we had kids.
I like to refer to myself as SEASONED.

if you can control it, which is a huge if, it is absolutely no different than any other form of entertainment that people spend money on. The only difference is you have a chance to earn back money rather than just throwing it away on say a movie or dinner or drinks or smokes.

You would be amazed what people spend a month on going out to eat and or drinking. Now to me I think that is the ultimate waste of money. Yet these people look at me gambling and think that is the ultimate waste of money.

Line from the movie Let It Ride says it all.

you mention not being able to share your joy with anybody. no biggie, for the most part, the true pro's are low key and don't share their joy with many. maybe karma plays a factor in this?

Thank God our family and friends understand that this is how we make our money which also helps them and others when needed. We know this better than anything esle and it pays the bills, allows us the freedom to live a good life and help our family and friends, granted some people arent so lucky and they lose everything, there are good times with bad times, our good times have been out numbering the bad but because not to bragg we do know our sports(knock on wood) and know when not to chase. Every one has limits. So at least our family and friends know not to bite the hand that supports them. We help our parents who are disabled, our aunt, and some other people around who are needie, not to mention grown children and a 6 yr old. Gambling is our only income. The church and preacher probably doesnt like but they cant support us and we aren't going in the hole or using bill money to gamble. God helps thoes who help them self and will contineue too until he thinks we need to move on to another way of income, he supplied us with the knowlege and ability to use this gambling.

It is very easy to be accepted when you are able to have no "job" yet foot the bill for many things.

I am not so sure it would be so easy to be accepted by a wife and kids.

Right now, I could lose every penny I have plus all of my credit cards and available lines of credit, and tomorrow start a job fresh. Not so easy if you are the support source for others.

The wife here accepts her husband gambling, I do it myself. And even before things changed and he was working and I was working it was excepted. Until he got sick and i had to stay home to take care of him and child, parents and friends werent so excepting. But now that they see well, for one who is on disability and wife stays at home, that somewhere the gambling must be paying off. It pays for there meds and other things that come up and no one has been lacking. I believe that the spouse must understand and have an interest in sports in order for it to work though. We wont go below a certain point in the bank and dont chase, if we are down pay up, start new week. When you have hit bottom then rise above that you learn to take care of what you have because with any dumb decision you could be back to nothing. Even list gambling to file taxes so all bridges are covered. But there are some people who cant gamble, they arent disciplined enough to know when and how to stop nor have the knowledge.

The problem using.."day trader" as a so called ocuppation... some of your close friends and relitives will probably want to ride your coattails and ask you to show them how you make money doing this or anything else like ebay trading...

do any of you have a better way of explaining the big question..." what do you do for a living" ??

I will soon be asked that exact question...so it would have to be good..I have a lot of CNN type family and friends ..not too mention ex-wife

thanks
