you can buy a new iPhone off of ebay for around $420 that has been "unlocked" for use on any GSM network, currently in the US AT&T or Tmobile only.

I have a T-mobile tower 200 yards away and get great service so I want to stay with them. I barely get an At&T signal at home

I know it is possible, estimates say 400,000 hacked iphones are in use in China alone

just wondering if anybody has first hand experience

I've heard all the shit about apple turning hacked phones into bricks making them unusable, but apparantly that has now been circumvented

Q: Which network does my cell phone company use?
A:
Alltel: CDMA
AT&T: GSM and TDMA*
Cingular: GSM and TDMA*
Nextel: iDEN**
Sprint PCS: CDMA
T-Mobile: GSM
U.S. Cellular: CDMA
Verizon: CDMA
Other cell phone companies: Other small cell phone service providers have networks that operate on one of the technologies listed above.
* AT&T and Cingular are building new GSM networks alongside their older TDMA technology. Consumer Reports found that the two carriers' GSM networks don't appear to provide the same coverage that TDMA customers get. If you're planning to switch to one of these carriers, choose a phone that will also work on the more extensive TDMA network.
** iDEN is a technology that only Nextel uses.

I have one which I hacked and after I figured out I was able I bought 40 more to sell.

I am using one on TMobile and it works great. From the time I got it home until I had it unlocked and working was only around 20 minutes.

Best part is that I am paying $20/month for unlimited internet on TMobile, the same thing on ATT would cost me $60.

The basic gist of it is that the phones come programmed to only work with AT&T service. In order to get them to work on another carrier they need to be "unlocked". It doesn't give you any service for free or anything like that it just allows you to insert your sim card which will in turn allow you to use the phone with another provider besides AT&T.

I have a bunch on ebay if you punch in this item # you can see the listing and pics of the phone unlocked 290213559354

If anyone here wants one let me know, I will hook you up with a small gamblers discount. If anyone wanted to buy one on their own too I can help you unlock it for a small fee ;-)

this is what i was looking for..........couple questions

1) what version is the firmware (1.13 or 1.14)

2) I assume I can never update the phone to a newer firmware or it may brick, correct?

3) if i connect to my computer using itunes.......do I run the risk of it updating automatically?

4) if it bricks in the future or if there is a hot new update can I send to you for a nominal fee and have you fix it or will you walk me through it?

5) what kind of a deal can you offer me......$489 + $30 is steep....more importantly if I pay with paypal can you ship the mfer tommorow?

1) what version is the firmware (1.13 or 1.14)
All the phones I have are 1.1.3 but if you wanted 1.1.4 you would just need to update the phone first, then unlock it. Very simple.

2) I assume I can never update the phone to a newer firmware or it may brick, correct?
You can update the phone but I wouldn't advise it. The updates generally only add more security to the phone. Every update that has came out recently also has a hack of its own. Example is the itunes ring tone conversion, that just came out and a hack is already out for it. Generally the updates aren't for your benefit

3) if i connect to my computer using itunes.......do I run the risk of it updating automatically?
It asks you if you wanna update, if you click the box that says dont ask me again and then click cancel you are all set unless you manually go in and request an update.

4) if it bricks in the future or if there is a hot new update can I send to you for a nominal fee and have you fix it or will you walk me through it?
If you don't update it you should never have a problem. IF you somehow get yourself in a bad spot you can simply re-lock the phone and then unlock it again. The software I use not only unlocks it but also can reverse anything you ever do. Very cool stuff.

5) what kind of a deal can you offer me......$489 + $30 is steep....more importantly if I pay with paypal can you ship the mfer tommorow?
If you want to bypass eBay and do a direct deal I can cut you a little deal but that price factored in: 1) what it cost retail 2) Michigan sales tax 3) what it costs to list the phones 4) Ebay fees for the sale 5) Paypal fees on roughly $500 and last but not least 6) shipping.

When you break it all down there is a little less than $50 profit in each sale. But like I said, I can cut you a little off if we skip the eBay part.

FYI I also have a couple 16gb phones left if you are interested in one of those. That is what I use. If you have more than 2000 songs in iTunes you really need the 16gb.

Email me directly if you want. mseaton at thespread.com

BTW AU DUDE, there isn't a "new" phone coming out. Same phone but it will work on a 3g network. Which is you aren't an ATT subscriber doesn't do you any good anyway

If you phone has a sim card you can use an unlocked phone as a phone and use the other features with a WIFI connection. If your company doesn't use SIM cards you are pretty much out of luck.

Internet features (safari, email, youtube, google maps, etc.) won't work without GSM network or WIFI connection

So let me get this straight:

1. My current cellphone company must be on the GSM network (meaning either AT&T or T-Mobile since it appears they're the only ones on GSM)?

2. My current cell must be using a SIM card to put into the hacked iphone?

3. Once u put the SIM card into the hacked iphone, u just use it like your normal cell and pay an extra $20/month or so for unlimited internet browsing?
