"Still, every month millions of broadband customers are charged for line rental even if they do not use a home phone. This copper line provides connection to both the internet and the telephone network. Even fibre optic broadband typically comes down it for the last leg of its journey to your home (although Virgin, BT and other providers do offer completely fibre optic cabling to a small number of customers). The same charge amount usually applies whether a customer uses the line for telephone calls or broadband, or both."

And to top it off...She doesn't even have internet...It is hard to tell your mother she is stupid....

I love and respect my mom like no other.

I'd just put my foot down with this one though. It's time. You have your opening soon when she leaves for Germany. It's time to put an end to this nonsense. LOL.

I have 1 but it’s more for my alarm to run through. I have always heard that if u ever need to call 911, than a landline is more effective.

I think the only people who call us on our landline is our family.

However whenever I am home, I prefer to call people on my landline rather than my cell

Why would 911 be more effective on a landline ?

Ok with using the landline instead of cell at home, what the hell .... It's there, may as well use it for something kind of thing.

I have a landline but no cell. Wife and kids all have them though.

But there is a method to my madness, when I go out to drink, gamble,
whatever no one can reach me. If you want to talk to me you'll just
have to wait till I come home.

Another thing I've noticed is there addictive. When people aren't talking
or texting they're playing games. The world is passing them by and they
don't even notice.

The last two responses kind of blow me away !

Vegas Dave dude can simply turn ringer off and tune out the outside world, yet retain the ability to make a call or do other stuff.

I don't buy that as a valid reason to keep the landline.hey , whatever floats your boat.
To the bundled guy that doesn't even own a phone !
I salute you sir ! I have multiple checking accounts, haven't written a check in like 20 years.I just keep a minimal balance there for no legitimate reason. you have to do stupid stuff sometimes to get the best deal.a landline and phone number to a new client just proves that a landline is worthless.

I'm somewhat of a packrat, might be able to use this later sort of guy and have two large storage sheds, came with the property. There is not a telephone in those almost 2000 SF of stuff. I'm a border line hoarder sort, not to the point that absolute trash doesn't get removed, but 865 SF home and 2000 SF of powered sheds does create the probability of clutter

My house is clean and tidy, the outbuildings to a much more relaxed standard.

I started out with an internet/TV deal and after a year, the price was going up so they offered me the triple play. I told them I just wanted to keep my double play for the same price but they wouldn't do it, but they would give me the triple play for cheaper. I don't understand the business behind it but eventually I just accepted it. The worst part is that they tried to sell me on the landline by asking what I would do in case of emergency if I had no cell service

It’s good for 911. Around here Comcast makes it cost more without it than with it so everyone keeps it.

I have one, keep it because it is my main business number. I haven't called out on it in years, I have the number call forwarded to my cell. I only use it for my fax machine on outgoing.

Unbelievable that this many landlines still exist.

NumberAI, a startup that adds the sweet, 21st-century functionality of texting to good ol’ landline phones, raised $10.5m.
Some hip businesses have followed consumer trends and cut the cord of their business lines, relying entirely on email.
But NumberAI and several competitors are headed in the opposite direction — by trying to make landlines cool again.
[h=4]More than just an answering machine[/h]Anyone who has ever accidentally sent a text message to a landline knows, through a mixture of annoyance and embarrassment, the limitations of non-mobile phone numbers.
But landlines don’t need to be dumb: NumberAI and competitors Zipwhip and Call-em-all create software that enables businesses to text customers from their landlines.
And the platform doesn’t stop there: NumberAI also allows small businesses to program automated responses to frequently asked questions, collect payments, and spot customer trends — all using a dumb-phone number.
[h=4]But wait… Do businesses still need phone numbers?[/h]The number of households with landlines has declined from 92.7% in 2004 to around 43.8% today. But that still means that more than 50m households still rely on landlines.
More importantly, an increasing number of people find texting (and not phone calling) to be the easiest way to interact with restaurants or stores: 89% of consumers prefer texting business to calling or emailingthem.
So NumberAI isn’t actually clinging to an outdated type of technology, they’re improving customer experience. Plus, chatbots won’t be angry when you text them 3 times asking when your burrito will arrive.
