Anyone on USC -3 vs. UNC?

I've followed Spurrier for a long time and I have a gut feeling he's got a decent team in Columbia this year and he's heard all the talk that "he's done" or that "this is his last year..."

SC got blown out by Texas A&M in the opener last year (which is another reason I like SC in this spot...."lesson learned"??).

I haven't looked at UNC very hard yet, but I like SC in this situation.

Thoughts?

I'm biased obviously, but I think it's a good play. Mainly because North Carolina has gotten off to sluggish starts under Fedora against teams with a pulse. Definitely think South Carolina's defense takes a big step forward with the influx of talent on the defensive line and maturity of the secondary. Offense will probably take a small step back with a new QB, but UNC's defense isn't much to brag about either. Think the gamecocks end up winning by 10 or so.

I'm trying to keep from getting swept up by the annual North Carolina hype vortex. Seems like they are "due" given all that recruited talent every year, but then UNC winds up laying an egg. From a pure coaching standpoint, Spurrier vs Fedora - I definitely would lean towards the OBC.

This will be a very interesting game. The gamecocks always seem to have a roller coaster season. My gut tells me they should win this game by 10-14 points but something about that North Carolina offense makes me feel they could easily stay in the game. Both teams will be up for the game, hats for sure, but not sure I could honestly take NC +3.... Probably won't touch that game, but I would have to imagine spurrier takes care of business

Marquise Williams may be guy who determines this one. Dual threat and 4 returning top receivers. 17 returning starters and Fedora needs this one big time. Neutral field helps NC but their defense and sp teams have to hang in there. Could go either way.

UNC also got Gene Chizik as DC, so perhaps we see some improvement on that side of the football. Could take some time however...

UNC and Fedora need this game a lot more than South Carolina and Spurrier do. Fedora is 21-17 entering year four at UNC. With NC State on the road and Wake at home for their crossover games, UNC has a shot at 8-9 wins this season, but they have to get past South Carolina first. Spurrier's team is going nowhere this season. The line has not budged in Vegas, and there does not seem to be a lot of interest wagering wise in this game. Pass.

Spurrier has been pretty good opening week in Columbia going 9-1 straight up. If I remember right he was 5-5 against the spread during those ten openers. After last season's disappointment...I'm hearing there is a sense of urgency with both players and coaches heading into this season.

The advantage South Carolina has over North Carolina is defense. I love it when previous starters are beaten out by other players during the spring/off-season. The Gamecocks won't be close to the best defense in the SEC but they will be improved. Last year's version was pitiful. North Carolina's defense was just God awful during 2014 (117th total). Even with improvement and a new coordinator it will be hard to slow down opposing offenses with most of the same players. They gave up 498 yards per game last year, that's right 500 yards. Hell, you could play touch football and not give up that much yardage. Going from a 4-2-5 to a 4-3 may help some but that will take some time to adjust too. The ole ball coach -3 for me.

Remember this name: Pharoh Cooper, he is a difference maker and one of the best players in the SEC.

Well, they aren't playing this game in Columbia, so who knows.

But, yea, P. Cooper is a Top 15 player in the Country for sure, and needs to be on the field for every O play no matter where he may line up.

Spurrier blew as many games as the defense did last year. How many games did they have double digit leads and his refusal to understand how shitty Dylan Thompson was and giving up on the run game? It was crazy. He has to introduce himself to David Williams who is a talent and brandon wyles who is a marcus lattimore-clone almost and probably let pharoah cooper run wildcat 15 times a game. Until their recruit mcilwain comes in, he can't let their scrub qbs lose games. I guarantee if he ran on first down with wyles and williams, he'll have a lot of 2nd and 4s instead of 2nd and 10s but he is too stubborn. Gotta run the ball. In this game especially, keep unc potent offense off field. Spurrier def > fedora though. That dumbass can't stop himself from pulling marquise williams and also needs to understand what a talent elijah hood is. What a waste of a talent. I would love to have that kid at Clemson! I think this game shapes up as a 40-35 type final cocks....if spurrier pounds the rock with his rbs and cooper. Otherwise scrubby Dylan thompson clone connor mitch will turn it over like his predeccesor did and unc could sneak away with a win. Then cocks season goes down the tubes in my opinion--like last year. We'll see

During the 2011, 2012 and 2013 seasons (11 wins each) the defense allowed 18, 18 and 20 points per game. Last season the defense gave up 30 ppg. That's a huge increase. The D also gave up 5.4 ypc during 2014 compared to 3.6, 3.1 and 4.3 the previous three seasons. Another huge difference. Like I said earlier, I believe there will be much improvement with the defensive performance.

Spurrier's ten year record with opening games while at South Carolina.

2005: Central Florida (Won 21-15)
2006: @Miss State (Won 15-0)
2007: Louisiana (Won 28-14)
2008: North Carolina St. (Won 34-0)
2009: @North Carolina St. (Won 7-3)
2010: Southern Miss: (Won 41-13)
2011: N)East Carolina (Won 56-37)
2012: @Vanderbilt (Won 17-13)
2013: North Carolina (Won 27-10)
2014: Texas A&M (Lost 28-52)
2015: N)North Carolina

Straight Up 9-1....Against the Spread 5-5. Didn't cover in 2005, 2007, 2011, 2012 and 2014.

I can agree with this. And I don't think Nunez will be a QB when it's all said and done either. May be like Cooper, actually...

I like the over best in this game so far.

My PR line is only South Caroline -1.5 on a neutral field, so not thrilled about laying -3, although I do lean that way. The fact that this game opened at -2.5 and ticked up to -3 tells me not a whole lotta sharp $ has come in on the Powder Blue thus far with 70+% of the bets on the Gamecocks as well.

Cash, game actually opened at -1 at Scores&Odds.

If you want to get a true feel for odds on a game...I suggest you take a look.

I base all my plays on S&O before I call my local. Easy to follow, easy to track!

Who does Scoresandodds.com use for their opening numbers, Cloverleaf? I like to go with a widely available number, sort of like a consensus type of deal.

Don't know...don't care. I have use S&O as a BASE for my lines for years. Hell, I can go to the head of the RX forum and get odds from a number of different books...and I do. But I learned a long time ago you have to have confidence in one base line. Scores&Odds meets what I trust.

My local gives me Alabama -13 and S&O tells me -11.5....I will take the opponent +13. Maybe not a good example since I live in Alabama and am a Bama fan but you get the idea.

What I like if there is ever a problem/question with me and my game operator.... it's easy to pull it up regardless of the date/year.
