I'm being contacted by a company called Keane, they claim to have info on an asset ( a stock) from my mother's estate, and want 30% to help recover it. The estate dates to 6 years ago.

How can I locate this myself ?

A lot of times it escheats to the state if it is lost or unclaimed. The particular state will often have a website where you can search for lost/unclaimed property under your name/mom's name and then make a claim on the asset. Not sure which state hers would be, but here is California:

http://scoweb.sco.ca.gov/UCP/

Google unclaimed property and the name of the state (assuming you know it) and do a search, you may be able to do it yourself for no fee. More than likely the state would be wherever your mother's estate was probated.

PM me if you have any questions.

Thanks FHM: I believe I have located it. :103631605

The stock listed makes sense ( The local electric company).

The state's website also says by state law, a finder cannot charge over a 10% fee.

cool, glad you found it. If she lived in multiple states you should search all of them. There may be more money to claim.

Doug, I don't want to disappoint you but it is probably a deposit she left with an electric company and is probably less than $500 - if it was part of her "estate" that means she would have had her estate probated and I would imagine that you would know what assets were in her estate if it was being run through a probate court - I could be wrong - maybe she has 100,000 shares of google at a remote brokerage that no one knew of and your're the sole heir.

Everyone should check their state's unclaimed property records - a couple months ago I found $200 from a western union I sent some 7 years ago that no one ever picked up.

It's not a deposit, it's stock ( I know the amount now). My lawyer failed to find it, at the time.

When people die with a will and they don't specificically say X to such and such things can fly under the radar - even harder can be when someone dies without a will - typically, a brokerage account would not fly under the radar because they should be sending statements - hopefully, you'll get a big score now - I take it you're the beneficiary/heir
