Anybody here ever take their dog to an emergency vet?

Last night around 2 am our dog was pretty f----d up. My kids thought he was dying.I think he may have eaten something poisonous. So I call a 24 hour vet service. They tell me it's $150 to bring him in.
So once we get there, they come out and say it's $65 fir for them to call poison control. Then about 10 minutes later, they come out and want me to sign a form saying that says it for them to treat him it will be between $400-$700..I was like wtf? I couldn't do it. I had a feeling I was going to owe like 2k before it was all said and done. Is this normal? Does anyone have any insight on this? We ended up just staying with him all night and he seems to be better..I'd say he's at around 80%.

yes,,, its a DAM shame,, most of the emergency vets have adopted the trickledown bait and switch that is used in regular emergency rooms,,

there gonna charge you $$$,, so if they can stick you with a quick $ here,, and a tiny $ here,,, then they know if you walk the fuk out theyve already paid for the operations of their offices,,, sigh,,,

and Matt your so right,, the pomp and circumstance isnt needed in vet offices,, meet the Dr. pay the fee,, then apply fee towards any extended treatments,, overhead would go way down,, confidence would go way up,,

it just so happens that is the way it goes and i had to do it the other night with my dog.It was $150 to walk in with $95 of that starting off as the office visit and the rest going towards any care that may follow.So they had to do blood work and x-rays to make sure he didn't have anything in his stomach that he might have eaten.Well the workup that i mentioned was going to be between $400-$500 and i was like really and they said yes as this is the only way we can determine whats wrong with my dog,so when it was all over with it cost $475 total.I'M glad i had done it though as it gave me a better piece of mind.......my dog means everything to me so i'll do what it takes to keep him alive

My oldest boy had 2 teeth that were loose and infected. Vet wanted to do blood work first to see if he could be put under to pull his teeth. I kept asking how much? She wouldnt say. I said a thousand? Oh she said we just dont know could be more like 2 grand. Told her no way and that i didnt want my dog put under for surgery. Dude lost those teeth naturally thank god ! He has a snaggle tooth grin that i thank him for lol

you are right on....once took a pug to the emg vet....demanded lots of money up front and I panicked because the dog was about to die....paid...the dog died few minutes later anyway.

I think so too!! If it wasn't for a lot more schooling, I'd say screw it and do it now! Sad thing is that is what I wanted to do out of HS, and got accepted to the two best schools for Vet anywhere near here (TN and GA), so I decided on TN, got my room and everything. Then, my pops tells me he's not paying for out of state and I couldn't go, so I obliged. Needless to say, the asshole didn't pay for a dime of my education and I don't talk to him at all (he lives about a mile and a half from me) for way more than just this instance, but just sayin...

This WILL NOT happen to my newborn daughter. I've already started her a 529 Plan and she can go anywhere she wants, hopefully still on a full ride, though.

Vets in third world countries that I've dealt with have been awesome. Pricing is ridiculously cheap and it's like it used to be in the U.S. ...

I too avoid it at all cost. I give all shots and such myself, and have IVs and meds on hand if needed. My knowledge and just being good with animals is normally enough to suffice. Only time I've been to the vet in several years is because I had to get a Health Certificate so I could adopt a cat out of state, which the vet I know charged me a whopping $20 to get.

Hydrogen peroxide will make the dog throw up if he ever does it again. And it's safe. Glad he's ok!

A good vet is priceless. I'm sure there are some that over charge but how is this any different then human docs? Human docs crank of prices to be paid back by insurances and Rx's that sometimes aren't even needed. A vet goes to undergrad then medical school then has internship/residency....not sure why some of you think a vet would charge bottom dollar for services that took them years to acquire and learn. Emergency vets are insanely expensive, you have a doctor treating a patient overnight....what do you expect it to be cheap?

My Vet who I have been going to for years, Wanted to Charge me $120 dollars for 6 Heartworm pills.. I can get them online for $60 dollars with a paper prescription that you either fax or mail in.. I asked him for a written prescription, He gave me the run around, and didn't return my phone calls...
I have spent thousands of dollars there and he wants to nickel and dime me for $60 bucks... Thankfully my brother knows a traveling Vet who gives them to him at cost $50 bucks.. These Vets have no shame..
