Your IT guys can't be trusted. You need to "take care of them"...if you know what I mean.

I have some friends who play online poker and blackjack (yep, for $$$) during work.

VERY large company. Probably 30-40k employees.

Basically, the company is too big. The bigger the company, the easier it is for employees to goof off.

CedarCreaker,

It was an interesting sitdown. The HR manager calls me in and dumps this 6-8 page report from the IT dept on his desk and starts reading off site names I had visited, but it was BS. He named off like 20 porn sites that I had never heard of. So the report was BS or he was trying to get me to confess that I had looked at porn from work. I denied as I had not looked at porn & then he started naming off sports sites. I told the truth and answered yes as he read many of them. Ultimately I was told to stay off of any site gambling related. I obliged their request as it was their property and I respected their rules.

Hard to get busted when everyone knows I do it. It's not exactly hidden.

As long as I get my work done (which I do) they really don't care.

I am glad my company restricts all that stuff. It pops up restricted site ....blah blah. I knew the IT calls put in all different types of stuff to catch people. There are a few sites I can see. I never, never made a wager on the computer there .....just on unsecured phones in the break or conference room !!!

Similar situation @ one of my former companies.

Manager walks into our room (11 guys worked in the room), tells us that 7 of us were in the Top 10 company-wide for Internet usage. He was extremely upset (mostly because it made him look bad as a manager).

However, the Internet report was based solely on page "clicks". Well, it just so happened that our room often had to stay @ work during nights/weekends in order to answer any incoming calls. Everybody else in the office worked normal hours, but we were the newbies...so we had to pay our dues.

Most of the nights/weekends, the phone rarely rang. Maybe once every 2-3 hours. So what do you think we did when the phone wasn't ringing? In addition to playing a modified form of baseball, we surfed the Web.

But the report didn't take this into account. It just ranked you according to total clicks. It didn't differentiate between clicks on Sunday morning and clicks on Tuesday afternoon.

When we asked our manager to see the report (in order to determine how accurate it was), he said something like "You need to worry about your jobs, not this report."

I'll admit, some of us (me) probably surfed the Web too much. But if you're going to attack somebody with information from a report, I think it is only fair that you allow that person/people to see that information just in case there are mistakes/inaccuracies.

I used to work for a large fortune 500 company. one day i got called in for a meeting by some senior vice president from out of town! he basically told me that i was caught surfing for internet porn and that i was now on probation and had to attend some time management seminar, which i refused politely

the true story was that i had been planning my best friends bachelor party in Vegas during late night work after hours or on the weekend when no employees were around and had been looking for adult entertainment for the grand finale party

my boss told me that i was wasting companies time..blah blah blah...i told him it was not during work hours and to check the internet usage time....

he ended up waiving the meeting but i ended up quitting right after the bachelor party anyway as i won 13k at the Hard rock that weekend!! and that was probably 6 months of salary at the time!!!

Moral of the story:

Surf for porn at work and go to Vegas for bachelor parties!

Most other people are freakin clueless. I was officially warned for talking on the phone asking my buddy how his trip went in Vegas. These clueless non-gamblers claimed I was making bets when I was asking him how he won 17 dimes in Vegas. Other people never get it. There were people working there that wasted hours arguing with their spouse, I almost got dumped from a job for a 15 minute phone call.

RE: "Anybody get busted for gambling at work? "

Doesn't this question also apply to all in the industry that have had their doors breached by Locals or Feds under State or R.I.C.O Act attempts?

Or is that "Anybody get busted for work at gambling?"

I knew somebody was going to post that!!...i really have no reason to lie...its not like i am anti-porn

My salary isn't big, about an average Finnish salary, but working conditions seems to better here than some of you guys have. We can surf web sites we want, porn, gambling etc. Only when some important visitors comes then we might get e-mail, which says internet surfing isn't allowed during that time.

Work place here is probably called open floor, so I can see what other people are doing. A quick view around. Three guys are working, two surfing on net, one is using copy machine and is copying none work related stuff. Four guys just came from coffee break.

Everyday I see some people surfing in betting sites here, maybe 6-8 guys doing it. Nobody says anything. My ex-boss bets horse racing and he read racing magazines and placed bets during work time. Reason why he's not here anymore has nothing to do with betting, his salary doubled when he started in another job.

I have spoken with people which have worked this companys USAs offices, and most didn't like system there. They said, it didn't matter how productive guys were. Only thing which matter was how long time you spend at the office. Some local people "worked" 10-14 hours a day and looked like they were doing a lot of job. Some Finnish guys started to do same, but were happy to get back to Finland. Salaries are bigger in USA, but if working is like guys said, I don't want to work there.

I do my job, surfing, betting, taking a break and make private phone calls while I have a chance, and my employer has nothing to complain.

all they asked is that the 300+ employees do not download casinos. WELL there are always a few idiots so a few downloaded them then we went on lock down with the net

but my immediate boss now says he does not care as long as our work does not suffer and we are not DOWNLOADING things. and anyway he is a HUGE poker player so he can not say SHIT anyway

Well after working in the same place for 5 + years and surfing for seemingly for HOURS every day of those years, i came to the conclusion that they just don't care what we do on the net LOL

I mean i would have been dead meat LONG ago, but then again maybe only porn is the thing they care about. Regardless, i never heard a peep about my surfing habits during the day a work, unless i was surfing when a manager walks by and notices it constantly LOL "do some work for a change"...
