I'm miserable at my job. Completely miserable working in the insurance industry. I have thought about many different possible career moves, and think that maybe moving out-of-state would be good for me. I've thought about being a casino dealer, but it doesn' pay much to start. I'm a social person, and enjoy talking to just about anyone. Wondering if anyone has driven a cab for a living. Every time I'm in Vegas, the cabbies tell me they make good money. I think I could harvest corn by hand and enjoy that more than the job I'm in now.
Many moons ago I drove taxi in Vegas...............5-6 days a week, 10-12 hours a day........ for 13 months.
Fun job!
Did not like the long hours or the occassional ride where you had to sweat getting killed, but not a bad job if you dont mind driving in the city.
Most of the time you will spend sitting in a taxi stand at a hotel or playing liars poker at the airport with the other hacks.
You will put on about 150 miles a day in city driving on an average day.
Fun meeting people from all over the globe......especially the chicks. :manwh:

Fish, I figured you were a cabbie at one time or another, and I was kind of directing that question to you, since you are the resident Vegas expert. I invest heavily, and will fine with retirement, once I get there. So I am not really into "building a career," I just want to enjoy my work as much as I can, and earn a modest living until I retire. Having never lived in Vegas, is it difficult to move there and become a cabbie? I don't know my way around the town at all, but figure that it would be a pretty fun job, at least for awhile, once you do know the town.

I personally think everybody should drive a cab in Vegas, if only for a few months..........or days.
However, and I know some that do it, but anything over one year will wear down the vast majority that ever set out to do this job.
Having said that, why not try it for awhile while you looking for something else............it is fairly easy to get a job with a good driving record.
From talking to lots of the cabbies, it seems that a ballpark figure is $45,000. One guy told me $45K, and he worked 4 12-hour shifts a week. Another guy said 60K, working 5 12-hour shifts. Seems pretty decent, as opposed to making $25K starting as a craps dealer at a downtown dump.

So say i worked on average 5.5 days a week..........that would be 130 x 5.5 = $715 a week.
$715 x 51 weeks = $36,500 a year.
Understand, I was a lazy cabdriver and spent a considerable amount of time playing liars poker at the airport, mingling with chicks, hanging out in cablines, running into sportsbooks every couple hours, etc..............but i would say this is what the AVERAGE driver made in my day.
Dont do it. I drove for about 6 years. I am sure its changed a lot but the main reason not to do it is the new tram. Also lots of short rides. The strip from Sahara to Trop is only 3 miles. Many a trip from Ceasars to Ballys for 3 bucks back in my time. Fuggetaboutit. Lots of opportunity on the web to make $. Buyer beware.
