Get a Carfax report. If the car has ever been auctioned or used as a rental car, forget it. Check that the 'fax shows a steady, rational climb in mileage. The rear panels of Civics tend to rust out easily, so check them out. Look everywhere for unusual rust, inc. shining a flashlight on the seat springs. Do some reading at hondacivicforumdotcom. You'll find a lot of knowledgeable, helpful people who love their old Civics.

honda's are very durable reliable cars if they have been taken care of. I had a 92' Accord that my mother drove off the lot in '91. General maintenance here and there and about 130k miles later I gave the car to my female cousin.. she drove it for a year and the fucker fell apart.

I like Hondas, got 250k out of the last one.

This would be for stepdaughter, she has a Nissan Sentra that nobody can fix.

Would you prefer a much older Civic, like a 93 or so with 65k on it, or a newer one like a 2000 with say 140k on it, at a similar price ?
