I've had type 2 for about 9 years now. I must say I'm not very good at watching what I eat or exercising. I just started taking injections recently to help lower my count. I always thought that was the difference between type 1 and 2. 1 takes shots and 2 takes meds, but that's not the case.

Type 2 for 3 years now.

Started off really watching what I was eating. Now I slack off a bit on that as I got "bored" with "the diet".

I'm much more active now though. I'm off insulin (take metformin pills)

Best advice I could give is that when you go grocery-shopping don't buy stuff that will hurt you. I'll still buy some junk (frozen pizza) but I never get anything big where if I came home from work "hungry as a bear" I won't be able to go "too crazy". I get alot of sugarfree things, some fruit, some yogurt, etc

take care of yourselves dudes!! glad to hear nobody here is having trouble. exercise and diet is key (as well as the obvious a1c control) especially for you type 2 guys.

well the difference is more medically scientific but i'm sure you know that haha. i've known a bunch of type 2's on injections, just a more extreme case. depends on how much resistance to insulin your cells have, which is helped by diet/exercise. being a type 1, i know if i don't workout for a few weeks or months then i will see a steady increase in the amount of insulin i'll have to take per injection (my max unit of humalog right now is 13 or 14 units) no matter what i'm doing or what i'm eating. if i take anymore than that then i'll go low almost always, no matter what. i have lower resistance than most people because i'm active and doing well with my routines. i used to have a max of about 24 units before i got into working out and eating a little better (and i've had a max-dosage of about 11-12 when i'm really in the midst of my training.) bagiant - take care of yourself brother, you can get off the injections. my a1c has always run on the higher side and i've been warned countless times about the complications. you know it by now, hit the gym!

I don't have it (knock on wood), but it's in my family all over the place, so I know a lot about it. It's a shitty disease to get because it tends to bring all kinds of other crap with it. Diabetes itself won't kill you, but the complications it leads to will if it isn't treated properly.

One of my cousins got it when he was in his teens and basically described it as a lifetime diet. As for shooting yourself up with insulin or medication, it's my understanding that is all unnecessary if you eat and exercise right...and the insulin resistance can even be reversed to some degree after a few years of proper care.

On the other hand...my best friends mother in law is type 2, weighs 300+ lbs, eats massive amounts of food every time I see her and doesn't seem to give a shit. I'm shocked she hasn't keeled over by now.

all the above is true (assuming by calling insulin unneccesary you mean type 2.) type 1 requires injections. it's not a fun disease, but which one is? everything you do is a calculation (for me it's counting carbs, dosing up insulin and taking account for the activity you are doing/have done/will be doing.) if you got it, gotta play the cards you're dealt.

JD - take every measure to avoid getting it - if it's in your family it's prevalent! my family has a bad gene, also.
