Anyway Ive got about an extra 30 or so!!!! I exercise moderatly but not enough & I eat too much & terrible foods...

For what it is worth today I am starting the 'South Beach Diet'...actually it is more like a lefestyle change...pretty gay I know...but when I am 60 (I am 31 now) i want to be able to travel & be active...go sea--dooing I want to have fun....& I also know it is never too late to start...

This plan is Very Easy...I can summarize it here quickly...anyone want to join me in my challenge...You could start tomorrow & we could all be on the same pace...Bashers go ahead & have fun with this thread, but if anyone is interested let me know...it is not painful seems like a realistic plan & you can eat alot..!!!

the south beach diet? what is it SS?

I'm at 215 and stand just under 6'1.. I should be at 190-195 same as when I was in college. I don't exercise as much as I should and I like steaks and beer... I'm still trying to find a way not to exercise and to eat and drink yet not gain weight and lose what I have put on.. is the south beach for me?

I'm not totally familiar with that diet, but I hear it's similar to Atkins.

It may not work for everyone but I eat very little bread (maybe one (1) 7x11 Jewish rye loaf (no trans fat) every 2 weeks) and I limit cholesterol and saturated fat, though I do stray with penne alfredo occasionally. I about flipped when I discovered the fat content of alfredo sauce.

I usually buy products with low or no sodium when possible.

Plenty of spinach, brussel sprouts and asparagus are on my menu. I don't eat much fruit because of the sugar but I do drink about 3 liters of juice per week. My juice intake alternates between tomato, orange and cranberry. Oatmeal is one of my favorite breakfast items. I justify eating Multi-grain Cheerios because of the vitamins.

I like Total Raisin bran and their corn flakes. I really watch cereal with a close eye because they love to put a lot of sugar and sodium in it. If you can stand it, don't use whole milk in your cereal. I know 2% looks and tastes like water. Skim is flat out nasty and I don't like that soy crap. 1 alternative that I have learned to tolerate is a Slim-fast in my cereal. One thing to note is that they have some trans fat, sodium and sugar in it so use it sparingly.

#1 piece of advice: Drop the soda. Seriously! Your tri-glycerides will go back to normal with exercise and your heart will thank you later.

I'm not perfect. I use butter (which I feel is better than margarine because at least you know what you're getting) and I eat at restaurants where their mantra is: More fat, More salt, More sugar. I just try to keep my splurges to a minimum that way if I find myself somewhere and I want to eat a piece of cheesecake I'll do so and not worry about it.

The ATKINS diet is VERY DANGEROUS IMO.

In short, your body needs an adequate supply of carbohydrates and secondly you are consuming huge amounts of bad cholesterol.

Here is my personal RX diet recommendation to you, FREE OF CHARGE AND ONLY A THANK YOU NEEDED:::

1. Limit your bread intake to only ONE average serving per day, perferably bread without hydrogenated oils. Healthy bread is VERY GOOD for you.

2. Walk at a good pace at least 30 miniutes a day, 5 days a week.

3. Allow yourself only one slightly above average serving of chicken, beef, pork, or seafood a day and never have the same back to back days. I would keep the serving to no MORE than 13 ounces total for the beef and pork.....which is more than enough to satisfy you. The reason I say this is because you will be approaching 300 mg of cholesteol with anything more......and this should account for 80%+ of your cholestrol for the day.

4. Drink at least 32 ounces of PURE water daily.

5. Limit fried foods and desserts to one serving per WEEK TOPS.

6. Try and eat a healthy breakfast.......oatmeal, rasisons, almonds, walnuts, OJ, ANY BERRIES, etc.

7. Drink alcohol and caffiene in moderation.

8. Concentrate and try to get minimum of 5 fruts and veggies in during the day(organic when possible)

9.. Last but not least, for overall health, DO NOT CONSUME ANYTHING WITH HYDROGENATED OILS in them......READ ALL LABELS and stay away from this killer!!

Good luck

I very much beleive so...you sound like a carbon copy of me...Anyone interested in starting it...I will Post Phase 1 Today...not to sound gay...but I beleive this thread could keep you motivated...& Accountable...Starts Tomorrow though as I have already started today...Phase 1 is 2 Weeks (& beleive me not that Bad)...apparently you lose 8-12 pounds during phase 1.

I will post Phase 1 a little later...so think about it today...also WE should have some kind of accountability in that anyone who agrees has to post every morning their weight or something like that...watching it every day really helps with motivation I beleive...

guys, im heavier than all of you. 240lbs at 6ft even.. i find this interesting as i started Atkins today myself.. Im a weight lifter but will be going on a high repetition program along with treadmill today as well.. im staying under 30 grams of carbs daily..

The atkins diet works by using stored fat as your primary fuel source.. eliminate carbs and your body is forced to used stored fat. simple as that. this is temporary for me as well, im trying to lose 50lbs and get to 190 by June. lets get going..

Cannot disagree with a word....in fact this is ultimately a crbon copy of Phase III (I beleive) in the south beach diet. My girlfreind has the papers at her office so I will confirm later...its all about replacing your 'bad' carbs with 'good' carbs.....

SOUTH BEACH DIET PHASE I.

In a Nutshell it involves NO SUGARS & no CARBS for the first two weeks. This is simply to change the physiology of your Body. Now I will post more details later but in a nutshell it is all about PROTEIN for 2 weeks...NO CARBS...

Breads, starches, Pastas, Patatoes, Carrots are all examples of foods that are out for 2 weeks, aswell as all Sugars, including fruit, juices etc etc. (I will come back with a greater list Later).

Olive Oil, Nuts, Cheeses, Meats, Eggs (preferably as lean as possible), Most vegetables. Are all foods that are in. Yoghurt (sugar free) (I will expand later.)

Drinking alot of water...3-4 litres a day is Imperative, as is No Sugar, aswell as NO CARBS...

Probably should spread your meals out to 3 small means & 2 small snacks so you eat 5 times a day...Always down 500ML of water right before you eat...therefore you will feel Full.

I also beleive being accountable to yourself is very important...Two things we can do about this are we can Weigh ourselves every day...& post it in This thread if wanted...so we are accountable to ourselves aswell as anyone else who wants to give this a shot...

Remember starts tomorrow...there is no point procastinating...

In the meantime if anyone can expand on the food list in terms of what is not allowed & what is allowed for the first two weeks that would be helpful...

In high school, I played football as a lineman...5'4 200lbs. Worked out with the team, blah blah just kept gaining weight.
During the summer, I got bored, so I started running on the treadmill. I'll tell you what...you run 7 miles a day on a treadmill, you can eat whatever you want! I did it because I enjoyed it, not to lose weight, so I ate mostly turkey sandwiches and not too much greasy stuff.

I didn't even weigh myself till sometime in the fall and I had dropped down to 155.

Then came college and now I'm up to 175 and feelin fat again...
