My roommate in the mid-90s subscribed to the magazine CMJ. With every issue, you would get a CD that had 15-20 songs that were on soon-to-be-released albums. One of these CDs had the Johnny Cash version of Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage." Just hearing that version made me go out and buy the album Cash did with Rick Rubin, "American Recordings." That one song opened up me to a lifetime of being a Johnny Cash fan. It is so funny what one little thing can mean in life, because I am so grateful to have enjoyed all of his music since that day.
