I haven't been fishing in over 15 years, I don't have any rod n reels, lures or anything. Not sure why but lately I've been really wanting to go, thinking of taking my 8 year old. Just seeing if someone could recommend some rod n reels for both adult and child ( she's left handed) if that matters. Should I just go to walmart and buy them or would bass pro or dicks be better? Again I'm totally ignorant to any brands out there

I would go to Dicks or an outdoors store so they can thread the reel for you and assemble the reel onto the rod. If you go to walmart the you'll have to thread the reel yourself.
For the 8 year old thats never fished i would get her a light action rod with an old style push button reel. She could probably handle a spinner reel if you are catfishing or something where she wont have to cast a lot , BUT , i would not get a bait caster reel or she'll get tangled and clustered all day.
As far as your rod it really depends on what type of fishing you are doing and what body of water you are fishing in.
If you are bass or crappie fishing you can increase your chances of catching by using live bait (shad or shiners) over lures.
