Trying to find an older one. Nothing fancy. Just something that I can take out on the lake and dick around in with my friends. Can I realistically get something halfway decent for like 3-5K? Someone help me out. There is a lot of stuff on Craigslist that sells in that range that looks decent but I don't know the first thing about boats other than I want one.

You usually dont use the boat as much as you think you will when you buy it, I sure didnt. Plus, I get tired of the idiots on the water I see enough idiots on the roads everyday.

You might not have wanted to use the term "dick around" in your post JT.

I heard this on Johnny Carson yrs back. The 2 best times you will have as a boat owner is when you 1st buy it and then when you sell it.Last boat i had, i sold it with about 60 hrs on it as i kept it in cold storage at the dock.My problem was my community had a pool and clubhouse etc and i always spent my free time there and hardly ever took the boat out and didnt wanted to drive the 2hrs or so roundtrip to take it out......ck

There is a boat for sale I see every day on my way to work. It started at about $15,000.00 and now a year later I think it's at $8,900.00. It looks like a decent boat. It's about a 24 or 26 footer with a cubby cabin. I don't think people are buying boats right now so your should get a great deal.

I own boats. Don't buy a boat if you are new and have not spent time on a friend's boat or if you know nothing about the marina-local waterways/ upkeep/ contractor/ chandlery store /insurance/ Coast Guard scene. Boats are like pets in that they age and need care and are always 'there'. Never buy a boat without having an experienced owner- friend or professional appraisal (as a newbie you will have no idea what to look for - there are hidden issues that might make the boat worthless). That said, similar to houses, solid boats are being given away due to the recession and upkeep economics. Beyond boat economics, it is said that old men look back and say that their best proudest memories involved struggles and adventures. Boats are an adventure.
