I own boats. Don't buy a boat if you are new and have not spent time on a friend's boat or if you know nothing about the marina-local waterways/ upkeep/ contractor/ chandlery store /insurance/ Coast Guard scene. Boats are like pets in that they age and need care and are always 'there'. Never buy a boat without having an experienced owner- friend or professional appraisal (as a newbie you will have no idea what to look for - there are hidden issues that might make the boat worthless). That said, similar to houses, solid boats are being given away due to the recession and upkeep economics. Beyond boat economics, it is said that old men look back and say that their best proudest memories involved struggles and adventures. Boats are an adventure.
