I am considering a trip to Montserrat and I have been told that the only way to travel there is via marine ferry or helicopter from Antigua. If any of the Antigua forum members have any information about the current conditions on Montserrat I would greatly appreciate the input.
The travel websites make the place look beautiful, however my wife has publicly questioned the sanity of planning a trip to "volcano island". Any information would be helpful.

If you stay in Antigua for a day or two,go spend a day at Half Moon Bay.A great little empty beach. And then go to English Harbour and find a little resteraunt called the Red Octopus and have dinner.Looks like a dump but some of the best seafood I have ever had.

The current government and tourism websites say the north end of the island has returned to normal life. However, I am sceptical of the claims. I was hoping some of the folks working in Antigua would be able to give an unbiased opinion.

That Island is a Volcano! Last eruption I believe was in 1997 when Plymouth, the capital and commercial center was abandoned. Have a nice trip!!

Well, heres the real scoop,
You can go to Montserrat from antigua via Ferry or Heicopter, I know the operators for the copter and can hook you up, try staying a day or two in antigua, interesting island, GREAT beaches, 365 of them, clear, blue beaches, Montserrat is not burnt to a crisp, but is a beautiful place, alot of construction going on, and people have been returning from England monthly, even after they were given soooo much by england, house, money, work etc
if your want to check out the helicopter web page at Helicopter web site

You are better off staying in Antigua and taking a 40 minute helicopter trip with Caribbean Helicopters.

Thanks for the information. This makes the process a lot more palatable for my wife. Even though we live in C.A.,(within sight of several volcanoes) the media attention to Montserrat made it look really active.
