(Gray News) - A Virginia man was convicted of stabbing a woman nearly 90 times and stuffing her remains into a toolbox, according to authorities.
Hagen Lawrence Roberts, 41, was found guilty of first-degree murder and stabbing in the commission of a felony on Feb. 25 in connection with the murder of 63-year-old Cynthia Capps on Oct. 8, 2020,
according to a press release.
Officers responded to Capps’ home in October 2020 after her husband called 911 to report that he couldn’t find his wife after taking a shower.
The husband called 911 after finding a “single drop of blood on their kitchen floor.”
While investigating Capps’ home, police learned that the couple rented out a room to Roberts. Officers attempted to enter the room but found that it was locked, prompting them to force entry.
Roberts was found lying on his bed, seemingly wet from taking a shower.
Police observed a cut on his right hand that had been wrapped in a black bandana.
Upon searching more of the property, police found bloodstains in the backyard and a toolbox. Officers opened the toolbox and discovered that Capps’ body had been stuffed into the toolbox.
An autopsy revealed that the woman had been “stabbed over 90 times in the head, face, and neck.”
Investigators also found bloodstained clothes in a trash can and bloodstains throughout the house.
Roberts was sentenced on Feb. 25 to life plus five years, the maximum sentence available.
