A man walked up to a 13-year-old boy and slashed his throat in an unprovoked attack near Daytona Beach Pier on Valentine’s Day.
The boy miraculously survived the attack.
The boy’s father said he could see “all the way down to the meat” after a man slashed his son’s throat.
The Clarke family was walking down the boardwalk in Daytona Beach on Saturday when 44-year-old Jermaine Long approached 13-year-old Sullivan Clarke and intentionally sliced his throat.
“I thought he was stealing Sully’s phone,” the boy’s mother, Lori Clarke told Fox 35. “As soon as he slashed him, I yelled, and I said ‘Hey!”
“I could see his neck gashed wide open. I could see all the way down to the meat,” the boy’s father told a local Fox affiliate.
The boy recalled how he miraculously turned his head at the last second which is why the injury was not fatal.
“I turned at the perfect time… I happened to be looking up at the slingshot, and I turned. And that’s why he got the side of my neck,” the boy said.
Doctors said that if the gash was just one millimeter deeper the boy would have died.
Long is being held in jail without bond.

A Florida sex offender is behind bars after allegedly slashing a teenager's neck while he walked along the Daytona Beach Boardwalk with his parents on Valentine's Day.After spending the day at the Daytona International Speedway, Sullivan Clarke, 13, was talking on the phone while walking back to his hotel with his parents.
His mother, Lori, saw a man approach Sullivan and quickly slice his neck.
"I thought he was stealing Sully's phone," Lori told affiliate FOX 35 Orlando. "As soon as he slashed him, I yelled and I said ‘Hey!’"
Sullivan’s father, Jerod, said as soon as they realized what happened, they could see their son's neck "gashed wide open."
Doctors told the family if the cut had been one millimeter deeper, the attack would have been fatal.
