Last week Congress rejected President Bush's plans for new nuclear weapons ... Bush wanted to spend almost $100 million of YOUR money on new nukes--at the same time he is trying to convince Iran and North Korea not to build their own! No wonder his efforts with those countries are not going well...

This logic coming from a country that has twice nuked innocent civilians .... who the hell can blame em for telling Bush to stick it

Well, one can hardly blame the international community for wishing that Iran and NK would get rid of their nukes. That said, India, Pakistan and Israel are worrisome as well (volatile region.) But you're right, the US is the über-hypocrite on this issue, regardless of what kind of altruistic motives the American gov't claims to have in regards to its nuclear arsenal. It's not hard to understand why other nations clamour to have them. They are, after all, an effective deterrent.

And IF Iraq had one we never would have bothered them. Other countries know this and are rushing to get a nuke. Our fearless leader has made the world so much safer.

Blaming the neocons for your nuclear arsenal is really short-sighted. If you fired every last one of them you would still have them, and would still be researching how to make them more precise, etc. The problem here is alot bigger than that.

Truth be told, if one nation on earth is going to play globo-cop, better it be the US than NK, for example. I say that because I'm Canadian and we get along (more or less.) If China or Russia turned into the world's only superpower, we'd all be clamouring to get nukes, too.

I was asked the other day if I could go back in time when and where would I go. I answered that I'd head back to that time when the atom was split and some dildohead thought to himself 'aha! I could blow up the planet with this discovery!!'

Human beings (well, men mostly) are a diabolical bunch.

Blah! Blah! Blah!

The money was earmarked to maintain the present stockpile of H Bombs and to modify Nukes into bunker busters. The Republicans in both House and Senate shot it down.

More Nukes were not being created - just modifications to, and renewal of the exiting stockpile.

And where were your comments when Clinton was selling nuclear and missile technology to the Chinese - you hypocrites!

Both Germany, & Japan in particular-- were more technologically advanced than the Allies. Towards the end of that war Japan had chemical & biological factories both at home & particularly in Mainland Asia-- using the exact same WMD's you hear about today. They had developed missiles for deploying(had previously attempted to deliver them here on different types of balloons w/ mixed results) them, and for carrying those payloads the following: precursor jet airplanes capable of intercontinet travel without refueling, & arena-sized submarine carriers that would troll the world delivering their payloads.
The only things that saved us in the weeks before we nuked them:

their army & navy were squabbling over who was in charge & logistics...

we dodged THE bullet there.

Can you guarantee no one else in the world will possess develop nukes if we get rid of ours? Are we evil(& stupid too)-- capable of nuking any country?

You are the one who can stick it. Dropping those bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki actually saved hundreds of thousands of American lives, as well as Japanese, by making a full scale invasion of Japan unnecessary. The Japs should have surrendered a year before that when the war became tactically unwinnable for them, and goddamn them for making the U.S. have to actually use those bombs. You suck, Doc.

American:

stick it ....

I've read where the Japs were ready to surrender after we nuked the first city ....

Its funny how the Bushies scream about Hussein when he used Chemicals during the Iran - Iraq war and this administration knew about it and turned their heads the other way and now we have that BS

I love it how we are telling other countries who can and not have nukes why we've killed over 100,000 civilians in a country we invaded illegally

The Neo-Cons are a scary pack of lunatics ..

Since well over one hundred thousand people died and several hundred thousand people suffered disastrous consequences after dropping the bomb, this oft-touted 'fact' is nothing more than self-serving back-patting. Nobody knows for sure what a full scale invasion of Japan would have brought. We do know for sure that dropping the bomb was the darkest moment in human history.

The Japanese, nor anyone, made the US drop the bomb. Nobody made you build it, nobody made you deploy it. It was a tactical decision that, whether right or wrong, should not be discussed so lightly and dismissively. Could we kindly learn from our history and work toward getting rid of all global nukes rather than spend our time defending their use?

Problem is that we don't lead, follow or get out of the way, we bully and impose our will with hypocritical righteousness.

Ho hum!

It's the same tired old crap. Blame the US for everything - it's all our fault - blah, blah, blah!

Hey Doc - don't forget all of the WMD we used against everyone in WWI - we were just awful and we should be taught a lesson in how to treat our enemies with kid gloves.

Right!

QUOTE]

World War II was the darkest moment in human history. Dropping those bombs put an end to it finally. Military planners were estimating at least 500,000 American casualties for a full scale invasion of Japan, over a million for the Japanese. These military planners are pretty good at estimating things like this. Libs are running around saying that over 100,000 have died in Iraq, and that's not even a full scale operation. Although I don't believe the latter, I don't doubt that there would have been massive casualties in the Japanese invasion that tally over a million combined. Remember that the Japanese were an enemy at the time that deserved no lleniency or quarter. Keep in mind their misbehavior at Nanking, the Bataan Death March, and the fact that 37% of allied prisoners of war died after capture by the Japanese (compared to 1% who died after being captured by the dreaded Nazis). Don't cry me a river for the Japanese...there are better causes.
