BREAKING: DOJ Won't Defend Laws That Block Benefits For Gay Military Couples

Talking Points Memo has a major scoop from the DOJ.

The Obama Justice Department has concluded that legislation banning same-sex couples from receiving military and veterans benefits violates the equal protection component of the Fifth Amendment and will no longer defend the statute in court, Attorney General Eric Holder wrote in a letter to Congressional leaders on Friday.

“The legislative record of these provisions contains no rationale for providing veterans’ benefits to opposite-sex couples of veterans but not to legally married same-sex spouses of veterans,” Holder wrote. “Neither the Department of Defense nor the Department of Veterans Affairs identified any justifications for that distinction that would warrant treating these provisions differently from Section 3 of DOMA.”​

Obviously this latest move will cause an immediate firestorm of condemnation and wailing from the enemies of civil equality. HURRAY!

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Gay marriage is all but legalized in Maryland after the legislature gave its final OK Thursday to the law that's being sent to Gov. Martin O'Malley, who said he expects to sign it sometime this week.
The state Senate voted 25-22 for the law. The vote comes less than a week after the House of Delegates barely passed the measure.
Maryland will become the eighth state to allow gay marriage when O'Malley – who sponsored the bill – signs the legislation. The Democrat made the measure a priority this session after it stalled last year.

During the debate in Maryland's House, I joined same-sex marriage supporters outside of the chambers who were anxiously awaiting the vote. I met two moms and their 4-year-old son Will. After standing for hours, Will was tired and seemed a bit uninterested. I could only imagine how hard it would be to understand the complex discussions as a 4-year-old.

But the next day I saw a photo of Will and his family taken right after the House voted in support of marriage equality. His little face was lit up with joy, and he was cheering as his moms hugged him with the love that only a mother can provide. Will may not have understood the debates, but his smile after the vote proved one very important thing: even a 4-year-old knows the value of human dignity.





Yesterday was a day for Maryland's children. It was a day for human dignity. After years of hard work, we signed a bill into law that protects individual civil marriage rights and religious freedom equally. Yesterday, we came together as One Maryland and showed that there is more that unites us than divides us.


At the heart our efforts were for Maryland's children. All of us, wherever we happen to stand on the marriage equality issue, can agree that all our children deserve the opportunity to live in a loving, caring, committed, and stable home, protected equally under the law.

How is two consenting adults having a relationship the pretext for the age to be dropped for molestation and animal sex? The ages of 18 and 21 are pretty universal i dont see a big population of molesters trying to lobby to get that age dropped in favor of a younger age because of the success of gays marrying. Even if they did band together, molestation isnt consensual, in fact that is why its called molestation. Here is the definition of molestation:

To subject to unwanted or improper sexual activity

And animal sex is hardly consensual regardless how much you may think your shiatsu "may want it". Also, since when is morality tied into one's sexuality? Do you not know plenty of straight people who are total scum morally? I know I do! I am not sure how child molestation and bestiality figure into your argument either...both are against the law. A relationship by two consenting adults is completely legal so far as I can tell. Perhaps you should quit being so quick to judge someone's character - after all, if they really didn't bother you...you wouldn't care if they were parading down the street or hiding in their homes.
