Sounds like human nature to me --- most people aren't action heroes, most people aren't ready to die. French, American, Spanish, Egyptian.

I'm going to assume dozens of teachers/administrators have jumped in a closet during school shootings, leaving the children on their own.

During the Navy Yard shooting --- didn't the security guard lock his door, and stay in the video/security room? In fact, I think that was standard procedure.
