something like if the first string QB comes out for injury or whatever reason and then the 2nd string QB comes in, and for some reason something happens to him, and a third comes in does that make it so that either the first or 2nd string QB can no longer be eligible to come in? Maybe im just dreaming all of this up for some reason years ago i thought this was an issue, but maybe its just college or im losing my mind.

Wow, this sounds horribly gay if it is true. In college there's schools that run dual QB's and swap in and out. I've never heard of a 3rd stringer... or if they go down to injury. Weird.

it is definitely a rule ... though the exact language of it im not quite sure.
there are always extenuating circumstances. but its generally a good rule.
similar to how nba players have to shoot their own FTs or leave the game.

not sure about that, but i know if the 3rd stringer comes in, the regular starter can't play a down in the game, but the 2nd stringer can. i heard it in a Niners game when Rattay went out and Dorsey came in.

Shooting your own FT's is a lot diff than sitting out for a bit. Shooting a free throw is an uncontested chance at scoring. Coming back after a football injury is like saying "he go the wind knocked out of him and couldn't come back in for a few mins" he didn't wanna come back in after the 2nd QB got hurt... and now he's fucked.

That just doesn't make sense to me. Uncontested scoring vs. a breather--in a more heavy hitting sport might I add. Unless you're the Pacers vs Knicks or whoever it was lol.

I think that is the rule in the NFL for quarterbacks.

If the third string QB comes into the game and plays, the 1st and 2nd string QB are not allowed to play again in that game.

For this reason, that is why Detmer was always the Eagles second string QB because he is the holder for the kicker.

There is an NFL rule along the lines of allowing an emergency QB that does not count against the roster. That quarterback is only allowed to enter the game under certain conditions. I believe it's something like if he enters before the 4th quarter then no other quarterback is allowed to re-enter the game.

Seems like during Doug Flutie's last season with the Chargers he was that emergency QB a lot, and would come into the game in the 4th to try and spark a rally (San Diego was really bad then).

Seventeen years ago (1991) the third-quarterback rule was instituted to enable teams to have an emergency quarterback available who was not on the 45-man game-day active roster, since many teams, for strategic purposes, only carried two quarterbacks on their game-day roster.

Everybody thinks they understand the NFL's "third-quarterback" rule. But do they?

The rule states that if a third quarterback is inserted before the fourth quarter, a team's first two quarterbacks cannot be used in the game at any position.

Another aspect of the rule is sometimes misunderstood. It is a coach's decision as to whether a third quarterback will be used.

The active quarterbacks do not have to be injured for a team to use its third quarterback

This question has pointed out something amazing. Maybe it's just me but I cannot find a set of the official NFL rules online--nor a way to obtain them.

NFL.com has a digest which is useless for anything beyond basic-101. There is no mention of the complete set on NFL.com.

What gives here. Does the CIA possess the only set?
