As a pre-med student at Lehigh University, Valerie Estela understands why government authorities and health experts are in a tizzy over caffeinated alcoholic drinks like Four Loko.
"When your body gets groggy from drinking, we've learned that's a defense mechanism to keep you from killing yourself," said Estela, 21. "Obviously, adding a jolt of caffeine offsets that mechanism."
That knowledge hasn't stopped Estela from occasionally downing one of the 23.5 oz. cans of the beverage,
which reportedly has the chemical punch of four to six beers and a jolt of coffee.
"It's a quick, cheap buzz," Estela said, saying she never consumes more than one. "But the next day, you have the worst hangover humanly possible. Everything hurts."
Government officials have decided that the mixed stimulant/depressant drinks can lead to something worse than a bad headache and a sick feeling and have effectively banned them. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration sent warning letters Wednesday to four manufacturers of the drinks, saying that caffeine is an unsafe additive to malt beverages and threatening to seize their products.
