doesnt seem that bad to me. say you start at 12 and end at 8. sleep from 8:30-3:30. enjoy the day while first and second shifters are at work, night life on the weekends since typical 3rd shift is sunday through thursday.

which means all day friday and saturday off.

first shift is the best i think, but i think you make 3rd shift way worse then it is.

id take 3rd shift over 2nd anytime.

I work 7pm-5am Monday thru Friday. It SUCKS... PERIOD...especially when you hate your job.

You have NO LIFE. You dont see anyone. Relationships with friends and family suffer. Relationships with significant others have ended because of it. Possible relationships with people that I want to see never grow because of it. It has started to affect me physically and mentally. You dont sleep as much as you should, Sunday nights you stay up doing nothing while everyone is sleeping.

There are SO many things as to why I hate it.

Nobody who works 50 hours a week gets any sleep or has a life. being a bartender and working 7p-4a when i was in college was great and i loved it.

this is what i would do to make it work.

get off at 5, get home at 5:30, sleep till 12:30. 7 hours is plenty of sleep. then you got about 6 hours to do what you want, from 2:30 to 6:30, thats where your schedule screws you.

your schedule isnt a 3rd shift or a 2nd shift, its a hybrid of the 2 which is what makes it worse then a 3rd and a 2nd.

a 3rd shift, 12-8, sleep from 8:30 to 3:30, thenyour open until 11:30. thats 8 hours. you can chillax and hang with people during the night and into the evening.

your shift basically requires you to work or sleep 18 out of 24 hours to have a somewhat functioning life.

you lose 2 hours because of your hybrid schedule.

I punched a clock for a 3-12 shift for 2 years

AlwayzRight knows exactly what he is talking about.

I gladly took the 4% pay cut when a spot opened up to get on days

Of course! That is a social activity in itself. Always people to come across and talk to.

yes, my point being that hours dont matter if you like your job. look at it this way, would you rather work a morning shift at a job you hate or a night shift doing a job you love? it must be time for a career move not an hour change

The job doesn't seem that tough ... seems like you find lots of time to post on The Rx during work hours.

Always I would not even call that 3rd shift. That shift sucks. Don't even think about leaving that job till you find one.

Jobs are not easy to find right now. I'm sure you are seeing that too.

it isnt a 3rd shift, its a hybrid shift like i stated. it a combo of 2 shifts, unfortunately the 2 worst shifts. to create a shift out of hell, which is his current shift.

I really liked overnights where I used to work. Only worked them occasionally and it was little more than drink coffee and watch TV. Might end up staying awake from nine in the morning one day to early evening the next, then sleep 14 hours straight

It has it's advantages (more pay, no real "bosses" looking over your shoulder, less work to do if you are in the service industry, etc.) but the lasting effects if has on your body isn't worth it. I worked a graveyard shift for 3 years and doing that + school has really destroyed my body.

Way back when I worked 3rd it was bearable. I could always get a couple hour snooze which helped.

Worked 2 jobs and played ball every night. I was younger then also.
